SMI-S Component for HP StorageWorks Command View EVA

Hi, I want to use HP SIM to manage our EVA's but CIMServer is playing up and continually restarting on the server with this error:

Faulting application cimserver.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module pegserver.dll, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00027a63.

As per a previous thread I have checked the Java Version & get the following returned no problem

C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\pegasus_home\jre\bin>java -Xmx1024m -version
java version "1.4.2_12"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.2_12-b03)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 1.4.2_12-b03, mixed mode)

HP's response was to uninstall Command View and re-install without installing SMI-S EVA.

I see there is also SMI-S CIMOM. Could this progam be causing a conflict? Whats the difference between SMI-S CIMOM & SMI-S EVA ? WHich one should be there ? If I uninstall SMI-S EVA and leave SMI-S CIMOM there (or the other way around), could this enough to getCim Server started and then get HP SIM talking to the server with Command View Running on it.

We run Command View 6.0.2.7

Points rewarded as always :)

Here is an extract from the PegasusStandard.log file

12/09/08-15:25:55 WARNING cimserver: Error: Bad attribute name: on line 1

A quick search on-line hasn't thrown anything up but thought it might help here.

Re: SMI-S Component for HP StorageWorks Command View EVA

If you're trying to run CV 6 and HPSIM on the same server that's not supported and it will cause problems. It is supported for CV 8 to co-exist with HPSIM.

Re: SMI-S Component for HP StorageWorks Command View EVA

Hi Thx - no we have HP SIM on another server just now. I'm leaving that while I try to get CIMServer up and running.

I have the following in my Add/Remove Programs on the server that runs COmmand View EVA.

HP StorageWorks SMI-S CIMOM
HP StorageWorks SMI-S EVA

& The Following Service

HP StorageWorks SMI-S CIMServer

After further reading last night I suspect the CIMOM program is from CV ESL - Is this correct? It's possible this exists from an old ESL Install. My current plan is to remove this and see if it resolves anything.

Re: SMI-S Component for HP StorageWorks Command View EVA

Tried to uninstall HP StorageWorks SMI-S CIMOM but got this:

The Installshield wizard for HP StorageWorks SMI-S CIMOM has detected that there are providers installed on the management server. These providers are dependent on CIMOM for their functionality. CIMOM cannot be uninstalled.

We don't have COmmand View ESL installed (which I think CIMOM belongs) to so not sure why it's complaining...

Re: SMI-S Component for HP StorageWorks Command View EVA

Just found this in the EVA Command View EVA Manual.

"When you remove SMI-S EVA, SMI-S CIMOM is not removed. You must remove it separately. You can remove SMI-S CIMOM only if SMI-S EVA is removed."

Do I need to have SMI-S CIMOM installed to allow SMI-S EVA to run. If not (and it is actually causing a conflict) should I uninstall SMI-S EVA, then SMI-S CIMOM and then re-install SMI-S EVA.

The lack of documentation on the integration of these Apps is a nightmare....

Re: SMI-S Component for HP StorageWorks Command View EVA

For CV EVA to work and be able to integrate into HPSIM you will need the SMI-S component installed as well.

Issues can and do arise if you have multiple CIMOM packages installed as you've discovered.

Not sure what FW you're running on the EVA's but CV6 is getting quite old. But, before going to CV 8 you will need to get updated license keys as it uses a different license manager and CV itself now needs to be licensed.

With CV 8 and HPSIM 5.2 you can share a server, it's supported and documented.

Not sure if you can install CV EVA without the SMI-S component. If you could I think you'd still be able to use Cv EVA for management of the EVA. But your error reporting / management may be compromised.

Re: SMI-S Component for HP StorageWorks Command View EVA

You can install HP's Command View without the SMI-S component. It is an option during the CV install.
