A load balancer is commonly used to protect critical applications. It prevents downtime, data loss, or compromised data recovery that could impact the availability and performance of core services.

The load balancer sits between the user (otherwise known as a client server) and the backend servers, rerouting requests to make the most of the resources available. This ensures the enterprise application remains always-on, providing business continuity in the event of server overload or essential maintenance.

It achieves these outcomes by providing:

Redundancy. Load balancers are typically deployed as a clustered pair to ensure uptime.

Failover. Provide immediate failover by rerouting traffic away from failed or compromised servers to functional ones, ensuring a seamless experience for the end user.

Speed/latency. Intelligently distribute incoming network traffic amongst the available servers in a cluster, improving server response times, and minimizing latency by ensuring the more efficient utilization of resources.

Customer challenges

The IT department at a commercial bank wanted to consolidate its multiple storage applications, and provide high availability, scalability, and resilience for its critical HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric based applications. An additional requirement for them was a load balancing partner with a wealth of specific storage experience.

Solution

Using two pairs of enterprise load balancers, and support from Loadbalancer.org, the bank was able to optimize its deployment of the HPE Ezmeral Data Fabric Software S3 feature.

By balancing traffic across all the available storage nodes, the Loadbalancer product secured the high performance and availability required of this critical application.

Furthermore, due to the multisite nature of the business, two separate pairs of 100G load balancers were required for installation across its data centers, using the product’s in-built Global Server Load Balancing (GSLB) functionality to provide multi-site failover for their disaster recovery data center.
