Unable to install VME Manager.

Hello, I'm trying to get HPE VME up and going to evaluate as an option out of VMware.

I've installed the ubuntu base, gave it a static ip. Updated everything.

Installed the hpe-vm, set the MTU to 9000.

When I select "Install VME Manager" it gets to about 70% and says "Failed to start 'MSNVME" and then I can select OK. It will eventually get to 99% but never 100%. I try and ping the address I gave it which is available with no response. (The VME Manager VM is not running, im guessing..)

If I exit out, and go back into hpe-vm, and go to <Virtual Machines> I can see "MSNVME" with the state of "shut off".

I can select it, and change the state from <shut off> to "start" I get:

error: Failed to start domain 'MSNVME'

error: Cannot get interface MTU on 'mgmt': No such device

Past topics show people have simply reinstalled from scratch and it worked the second time. No such luck for myself.

Any ideas? I am guessing the install process didn't properly create the mgmt device?

Re: Unable to install VME Manager.

Hello,

https://www.hpe.com/psnow/doc/a50013599enw let us know if the reference architecture helps, page 17 is where the installation is documented but it would be good to review the pre-requisites. Although the version for the reference architecture is 8.0.5, the instruction installations would not change.

Re: Unable to install VME Manager.

I may have gotten this working.

First, I switched to using the HPE Branded Ubuntu 24.04 OS install vs standard Ubuntu that we normally use.

Second, my test nodes are all single nic, non-enterprise set ups for evaluation. Instead of setting up any VLANs and MTU settings, I just left hpe-vm as-is and went right to installing the VME Manager. It went to 100% and seems to work.

I must have tried installing this over a dozen times with various settings etc and it wouldnt work.

Anyway, maybe this will help someone. Ignore all the MTU etc settings if you're just trying a simple single nic box for testing. (Most of us aren't blessed with spare servers....)

Now to see if I can get more nodes added and breaking more stuff along the way!
