Nimble VSA 5.2.1 Very Slow and Reboot Abruptly

Hello Community Members,

Does any experience an issue where Nimble VSA reboots abruptly when uploading a file to a iSCSI LUN and uploads to iSCSI LUNs are painfully slow like a dial-up connections?

Since it is a demontration appliance , is it by design?

I have assigned 4GB RAM + 4 processor cores (2 cores per sockets).

comments and suggestions are welcome.

Re: Nimble VSA 5.2.1 Very Slow and Reboot Abruptly

Hi TechEvangelist,

Abrupt reboots and painfully slow iSCSI uploads on the HPE Nimble VSA are not typical behavior and could indicate an issue with the setup or configuration.
It is unlikely to be by design, especially if it is affecting the overall performance and stability of the system.

To troubleshoot and resolve the issues follow the following steps:

1. Verify that the assigned resources (RAM and CPU cores) are sufficient for the workload and I/O demands. If necessary, consider increasing the resources to see if it improves performance.
2. Check the logs on the HPE Nimble VSA for any error messages or warnings that might indicate the cause of the reboots or slow performance.
3. Ensure that the network configuration is correct, including the networking settings for iSCSI connections. Check for any network-related issues that might be causing slow uploads.
4. Ensure that the HPE Nimble VSA's firmware and software are up to date. Check for any available updates that might address known issues.
5. Review the storage configuration and check for any potential bottlenecks. Make sure the storage is configured correctly, and the volumes and LUNs are optimized for performance.
6. Perform load testing on the HPE Nimble VSA to simulate heavy I/O and uploads to identify if the performance issues are related to specific scenarios or usage patterns.

If the issues persist, it is recommended contact HPE Tech support for further assistance.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Satish

Re: Nimble VSA 5.2.1 Very Slow and Reboot Abruptly

I am using VMware Workstation 15 Pro . Physical CPU is Core i7-4800MQ CPU @ 2.70GHZ x 8.  iSCSI storage is on SSD. I have converted all vNICs of VSA to VMXNET3 as well instead of E1000 to achieve better throughput but it does not make any difference.

Look the throughput while installing an OS on iSCSI LUN.

Hi TechEvangelist

Throughput seems to be acceptable as per the given graph. I could see jumbo frames have been configured for Data Nic. The operation latency and any IO throttling have to be checked. I would recommend raising a case with the HPE tech support team to analyze the array's performance.

Hope this helps.!!

Re: Nimble VSA 5.2.1 Very Slow and Reboot Abruptly

HPE Nimble Support advised that Nimble VSA is designed for demonstration purpose only and not designed to meet stringent and strenous workload requirement.  HPE Nimble Support wont be surprised that it will reboot abruptly in the middle of some heavy iSCSI operations i.e. doing storage vMotion across datastores.

In short, Nimble VSA is not expected to work like EMC UnityVSA /  Quadstor virtual storage solution.

Thanks.
