[OneView] Server Profile ISCI INITIATOR - What does it do ?

Hi,

When configuring a server profile in HPE OneView it requires an "ISCI Initiator name".

This option is located in the "Advanced" category of the server profile's configuration window.

You can either enter an ISCI Initiator name manually or use a virtual one generated by HPE OneView.

This parameter is mandatory, you can't leave a blank space or choose not to modify it.

My question is : what does it do ?

I searched for documentations but found none explaining the impact of changing this ISCI Initiator name.

Does it modify the one specified in the software "ISCI Initiator" at the OS level ?

Can you break links already existing between a server and its Storage Arrays if you modify the server profile ?

Does it modify the one specified in the Bios for network boot ?

What is the impact of pushing a server profile configured with a virtual ISCI Initiator name on a production server linked with a storage array using ISCI ?

I hope I was clear enough and sincerely ask you for your knowledge about this specific topic.

Best regards.

Hi

iSCSI initiators and targets prove their identity to each other using a challenge handshake authentication protocol (CHAP). The CHAP protocol is designed to prevent unauthorized systems from accessing the data volumes. HPE OneView supports two CHAP options.

Refer to OV user guide: https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=sd00002114en_us&docLocale=en_US&page=s_profiles-about-iscsi-auth.html

Also, on what device you are Configuring the profile ? (DL/BL/Synergy)

Re: [OneView] Server Profile ISCI INITIATOR - What does it do ?

Hi @Kashyap02 ,

I'm not refering to the connections settings.

I'm refering to the advanced setting of the server profile / server profile template : https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=sd00002114en_us&docLocale=en_US&page=s_profile-templates-about-advanced.html

I'm applying it on DL350.

Re: [OneView] Server Profile ISCI INITIATOR - What does it do ?

Hi,

Find the below answers.

what does it do ?
Ans: Set the IQN at the UEFI network boot menu.

Does it modify the one specified in the software "ISCI Initiator" at the OS level ?
-- May modify it, if doing iSCSI Boot with UEFI TBF.

Can you break links already existing between a server and its Storage Arrays if you modify the server profile ?
-- It is possible, specially if doing iSCSI Boot.
Also, if managing volumes through OneView, the ACL is made with the specified profile IQN (which I believe cannot be changed once the profile is created).

Does it modify the one specified in the Bios for network boot ?
-- Yes

What is the impact of pushing a server profile configured with a virtual ISCI Initiator name on a production server linked with a storage array using ISCI ?
-- Won't access the luns

Does it change the hardware iSCSI name?
-- No, it is independent.
