Oneview Upgrade Scenario
I have a Oneview (OV) 5.6 appliance running in my ESX environment. We are migrating from VMWare to Hyper-V. (HV). What is the most efficient way to upgrade AND migrate my OV appliance to HV?
Scenario 1: Install a fresh, vanilla 6.5 or 6.6 OV appliance in my HV environment, and do an appliance backup on the 5.6 OV appliance, and perform a restore to my new 6.5 OV appliance running on HV? Any issues with this?
Scenario 2: Install a fresh, vanilla 5.6 OV appliance in my HV environment, and do an appliance backup on the 5.6 OV appliance, and perform a restore of my 5.6 OV appliance running on HV. Then perform the various upgrades to get it to OV 6.5? Any issues with this?
Scenario 3: Using the Starwind Converter to migrate my 5.6 OV appliance (storage) from ESX to HV, and then the run the various upgrades to get the OV appliance to 6.5?
Perhaps there is a better Scenario out there...Please let me know your thoughts?
Thanks in advance....Scott

Answer: You cannot restore older version of OV backup on the newer version.
Answer: You can perform this. Make sure that all the hardware added to OV and the VM which is hosing the OV is in the same netwrok so that they can talk to each other.
Scenario 3: Using the Starwind Converter to migrate my 5.6 OV appliance (storage) from ESX to HV, and then the run the various upgrades to get the OV appliance to 6.5?
Answer: No comments on this.

You can also perform the upgrade on the current applaince to 6.5 and then take a backup. use the 6.5 OVA file to install the OV on new HV VM and then restore this backup.
Note: OV 6.6 is not released yet.
once you restore the backup, shutdown the old appliance. You might see few certificate alerts, to OV -> Settings -> Manage Certificate and Import the certificate for the servers which has this warning. Use the force trust leaf certificate option.

Latest Release : HPE OneView 6.5 (new release January-2022)

Re: Oneview Upgrade Scenario
I like that last suggestion best. I will upgrade my Oneview (OV) appliance in-place first on my ESX server to version 6.4. I will then stand up a vanialla 6.4 appliance in my Hyper-V environment. I wll plan on doing a OV appliance backup and restore. I don't believe there is an issue with a backup/restore of the same OV appliance version, but on two different platforms, correct? Since I have not done this process before, I hope there are no gotchas.
Can you expand on your comment..."You might see few certificate alerts, to OV -> Settings -> Manage Certificate and Import the certificate for the servers which has this warning. Use the force trust leaf certificate option."
I have many devices in this appliance. I would hate to thinkg I would have to do this for every iLo I have stored in the OV appliance. Perhaps you are referring to the cert on the appliance itself. Please elaborate.
Also, so this transition is smooth, I plan on having the same name and IP address on this new OV appliance to that of the existing OV appliance that I am migrating from. So obviously both appliance can not be on the LAN at the same time. I am just trying to figure out if I need to initially bring my vanilla OV appliance on-line with a different name and different IP address first, then change the name/IP address once the applicance restore is complete. Thoughts? Thanks in advance...Scott
