HPE primera C600
Hi guys,
i was wondering if we purchase a Primera C600 + Expansion containing SSD+SAS 10K +7.2k NLSAS, how would the tiering work? is there any way to utilize tiering?
regards
Hirosh.

Re: HPE primera C600
With the three disk types, you will have at least three CPGs: a SSD, a FC and an NL. When you create a volume, you specify the desired CPG.
You should be able to use the Dynamic Optimization feature to move a volume between CPGs.

Re: HPE primera C600
Hi ledvan,
In an HPE Primera C600 storage system, tiering is managed by HPE Adaptive Optimization (AO) feature.
AO dynamically moves data between different tiers of storage based on usage patterns and performance requirements.
The HPE Primera C600 model supports two types of media tiers: Performance Tier (typically SSD) and Capacity Tier (typically HDD).
When you have a combination of SSD, SAS 10K, and 7.2K NLSAS drives in the system, AO can utilize them for tiering based on the policies you define.
AO automatically identifies frequently accessed "hot" data and promotes it to the Performance Tier for faster access.
Less frequently accessed "cold" data is demoted to the Capacity Tier to optimize storage capacity.
You can configure AO policies to specify the tiering behavior based on your application requirements.
For example, you can set policies to prioritize certain volumes or workloads for the Performance Tier or specify specific criteria for data promotion and demotion.
It's important to note that the specific configuration and behavior of AO may depend on the version of HPE Primera OS and firmware you are using.
Do get back to us, if you need further help.
Regards,
Satish

Hi sheldon,
i thought dynamic optimization is for volume conversion.

Re: HPE primera C600
Hi Satish,
so basically the tiering is the same as in teh 3par. i was worried that primera does not have Tiering, because i could not find and information regarding it in any document. do you have any document which give overview about this on Hpe primera?
regards,
Hirosh.

Re: HPE primera C600
Hi ledvan,
To access the HPE Primera documentation, you can visit the HPE Support Center website (https://support.hpe.com/) and search for the documentation specific to your Primera model and software version.
Here is the URL for the HPE Primera user guide.

Hope this helps.

Re: HPE primera C600
hi guys
i have been thorough the primera user guide, there is no mention of AO or tiering , so i ask my question again, does Primera C600 support Tiering when used with SSD+FC+NL SAS drives?

Re: HPE primera C600
Hi ledvan,
HPE Primera is designed as an All-Flash array. However, it can be configured as a converged hybrid array.
HDDs can be deployed as a separate pool (CPG) for low-performance requirements. HPE Primera doesn't intentionally provide auto tiering between SSD and HDD.
Hope this helps.

Satish

Re: HPE primera C600
Im still not clear whether the Hpe primera C600 support AO or not , when we use 3 tiers of drives on a C670+ expansion?
Earlier you mentioned it supports, but in your last comment you mentioned , it does not. Am i missing a point in your points?

LB

Re: HPE primera C600
Hi ledvan,
HPE introduced two series of Primera Storage arrays:
1. HPE Primera all-flash storage arrays (A630, A650 & A670) and these models will support only SSDs.
2. HPE Primera converged-flash storage arrays (C630, C650 & C670), and these models will support FC, NL SAS, and SSDs.
HPE Primera C600 supports Adaptive Optimization (AO) when used with three tiers of drives (SSD, FC, NL SAS) in a configuration that includes the C670 controller and expansion shelves.
The HPE Primera A600 models are designed for high-performance workloads and are based on an all-flash architecture and it will not support AO.
Hope this helps.

Satish

Re: HPE primera C600
Hi Satish,
We are using HPE primera C670 with expansions. we have a mixture of SSD+FC+NL-SAS drives. The Primera OS is 4.5.7 & SSMC is 3.8.4 but there is no Adaptive optimization option in the SSMC (Under Storage Optimization) nor CLI. I am alittle confused actually, because i can see the adaptive optimization option in SSMC in the videos in HPE primera portal, so how come we dont have this on our system?
regards,
LB.

Re: HPE primera C600
Hi ledvan,
It seems that there might be a discrepancy between the version of Primera OS (4.5.7) and SSMC (3.8.4) you are currently using.
However, it's possible that the version of SSMC you are using does not include the Adaptive Optimization feature or it may require a specific license.
If the issue persists, it is recommended to reach out to HPE Tesh support for further assistance.

Satish

Re: HPE primera C600
Hi Satish,
i dont think this is a descrepancy between Primera OS and SSMC, because i have even tried the CLI and i did not find any command related to Adaptive optimization there neither.
P.S: may i know the Image that you shared , belongs to which SSMC version? is it from a Primera C600?what is the OS version of the Primera?

LB.

Re: HPE primera C600
A check in the HPE Primera 600 Storage QuickSpecs states:
"HPE Primera Base Software Installation and Startup Service
"Provides deployment of Dynamic Optimization, Priority Optimization, System Reporter, Virtual Copy, and an overview of Virtual Domain and Virtual Lock."
It does not list Adaptive Optimization.
@ledvan , off the top of my head, I believe the CLI command is "licenseshow". If you would, please capture the output and post it. You won't see Adaptive Optimization in the list, nor is there such a license for Primera storage.
With Primera, a given volume resides within a single CPG.

Re: HPE primera C600
@Sheldon Smith i have already checked licenseshow command output, there is no Adaptive optimization, however i have also checked the Primera Specification sheet and it says there is no extra license except for Encryption, all other features are built in, not only that, as you can see in the comments , some csutomers using primera systems(c600) with older FW(4.2) they are using adaptive optimization on ther systems and they have it.
P.S: in the licenseshow command output the AFC(adaptive Flash cache) is featured but that also we can set on our systems, when we try we get an output , its not supported

LB.
