Hpe Primera Deduplication +AO
Hi guys,
i have few questions about Primera Deduplication:
1. can we run deduplications on fully provisioned volumes or its only available on thin?
2. Can we use AO + deduplication?
3. do we have post-process deduplication, after data stored gets deduplicated?
4. if i dedup a VV which resides on SSD, then i moved that VV to a CPG which resides on FC drives, will it remain deduplicated & compressed, or not?
P.s: I have read primera data reduction(deduplication+compression) whitepaper, but things are alittle unclear.
regards,
LB.

Re: Hpe Primera Deduplication +AO
Hi ledvan,
1. can we run deduplication on fully provisioned volumes or its only available on thin?
Ans: No, Deduplication will not be run on fully provisioned virtual volumes.
2. Can we use AO + deduplication?
Ans: No, we cannot use AO + deduplication on HPE Primera. The data reduction feature of HPE Primera is a combination of both deduplication and compression.
3. Do we have post-process deduplication, after data stored gets deduplicated?
Ans: No, HPE Primera storage does not provide post-process deduplication.
4. if i dedup a VV which resides on SSD, then i moved that VV to a CPG which resides on FC drives, will it remain deduplicated & compressed, or not?
Ans: If you deduplicate a Virtual Volume that resides on SSD drives and then move it to a CPG that resides on FC drives, the deduplication and compression characteristics of the VV will be maintained as the data reduction techniques Deduplication and Compression are attributes of the VV itself, independent of the drives where they reside.
Kindly revert for further queries.
Hope this helps.!
Regards
Anil

Re: Hpe Primera Deduplication +AO
Hi Anil,
2. Can we use AO + deduplication?
Ans: No, we cannot use AO + deduplication on HPE Primera. The data reduction feature of HPE Primera is a combination of both deduplication and compression.
i could not find any information regarding why, Do you have any clue , why is that so?
3. Do we have post-process deduplication, after data stored gets deduplicated?
Ans: No, HPE Primera storage does not provide post-process deduplication.
so if i have a VV which reside on FC CPG and move it to SSD CPG to utilize the deduplication and free space and then move it back to the same FC CPG, thats not possible?! is there any workaround to deduplicate the data which reside on FC or NL-sas drives?
4. if i dedup a VV which resides on SSD, then i moved that VV to a CPG which resides on FC drives, will it remain deduplicated & compressed, or not?
Ans: If you deduplicate a Virtual Volume that resides on SSD drives and then move it to a CPG that resides on FC drives, the deduplication and compression characteristics of the VV will be maintained as the data reduction techniques Deduplication and Compression are attributes of the VV itself, independent of the drives where they reside.
just to be clear, by remaining deduplicated and compressed after moving to a FC CPG , i ment maintaining the data reduction and capaciy savings

LB.

Re: Hpe Primera Deduplication +AO
Hi ledvan,
Can we use AO + deduplication in HPE Primera storage?
Adaptive Optimization is a tiering technology that automatically moves data between different tiers of storage based on its data access and usage patterns, and performance requirements. It optimizes data placement to achieve the best balance of performance and cost.
On the other hand, deduplication is a data reduction technique that eliminates duplicate data blocks within a storage system to save space. HPE Primera will support Deduplication and Compression together as a single feature but does not support the deduplication technique alone as a feature.
do we have post-process deduplication, after data stored gets deduplicated?
Deduplication in Primera is performed in real-time as data is written to the storage system. This means that duplicate data blocks are identified and eliminated at the time of write, reducing the storage space required for storing the data.
Post-process deduplication typically refers to deduplication that occurs as a separate background process after the data has been stored. This approach is commonly found in backup and archival systems.
In Primera, the deduplication process happens inline as part of the data write process, ensuring that duplicate data blocks are eliminated immediately and optimizing storage efficiency without the need for a separate post-process.
if I deduplicated a VV which resides on SSD, then I moved that VV to a CPG which resides on FC drives, will it remain deduplicated & compressed, or not?
In HPE Primera storage, if you deduplicate a Virtual Volume (VV) that resides on SSD drives and then move that VV to a Common Provisioning Group (CPG) that resides on FC drives, the deduplication and compression characteristics of the VV will be maintained. Deduplication and compression are attributes of the VV itself, independent of the underlying storage media.
When you move a deduplicated VV to a different CPG, the deduplication and compression settings are retained. The VV will continue to benefit from the deduplication and compression ratios achieved, regardless of the specific drive technology used in the CPG.
It's important to note that deduplication and compression ratios can vary based on the data patterns and characteristics of the VV.
Therefore, the actual space savings achieved after moving the VV to a different CPG may differ, but the deduplication and compression features will remain active.
Kindly revert for further queries.
Hope this helps.!
Regards
Anil

Re: Hpe Primera Deduplication +AO
To make it more clear.
3PAR do an Online (Just in Time) Dedup, this is not possible with SAS or SATA Disk, because it is too slow.
Also, SAS/SATA Disk is so cheap, that makes no sense to store Data there with Dedup.
Dedup is set on the Volume, if you have an AO Volume, the Data is mixed and Split between SSD/SAS/SATA, it is not possible to do Dedup only for the SSD Part. Dedup is only for true native SSD Volumes.
You can migrate Data from FC (SAS) to SSD, then convert the SSD Volume to Dedup and also later back to FC (with non-Dedup). Make it sense, no, but possile.

Re: Hpe Primera Deduplication +AO
Hi Anil,
if a CPG is part of AO as a tier, the volumes inside can not enable Deduplication, right?

LB.

Re: Hpe Primera Deduplication +AO
Hi ledvan,
That is correct.
When a CPG is configured as part of AO as a tier, the volumes within that CPG cannot enable deduplication.
Hope this helps.

Satish
