HPGG vs HPGE revisions of SSD firmware

Greetings!

I'm a little bit confused understanding which is the most recent firmware version.

One of the recent advisories urges to have HPGG firmware (dated 17.02.2021) for certain SSD models:
https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/docDisplay?docId=emr_na-a00118275en_us

But looking at the revision history, HPGE is listed having a more recent date (19.04.2021):
https://support.hpe.com/hpesc/public/swd/detail?swItemId=MTX_3993ee3230d7403388af902bc5#tab-history

HPGE should be an older version because it's mentioned even in the SVTSP-2019_1216.01 platform firmware ISO.

Trying to update drives currently having HPGE firmware to HPGG results in the following:

[root@IP:/tmp/CP046871] ./CP046871.vmexe
Online HDD/SSD Flash Component for VMware ESXi - VK000240GWEZB, VK000480GWEZC, VK000960GWEZD, VK001920GWEZE, MK000240GWEZF, MK000480GWEZH, MK000960GWEZK and MK001920GWHRU Drives (HPGG), searching...
============ Summary ============
Smart Component Finished
Exit Status: 3
Update not attempted. All selected devices are either up-to-date or have newer versions installed.

Has anyone encountered a similar situation?

Re: HPGG vs HPGE revisions of SSD firmware

Hello @sergeisokolov

HPGE(F) (released 19.04.2021) is a subversion of HPGE and indeed was released after HPGG, but it doesn't have the fixes or enhancements of HPGG.

If you look at the Release notes, seems like the only change compare to previous HPGE versions is that support for Vmware 7.0 U1 was added.

I haven't tested this particular scenario but I think if you have HPGE(F) installed that you need a different method to apply HPGG firmware. Try the following:

1. Upload firmware HPGG package to iLO repository.

2. Select "Install component" and then "Yes" to add it to the end of the installation queue.

3. Using iLO console, mount an Simplivity SPP ISO and boot to it.

4. Choose "Interactive Firmware Update", then "Firmware Update".

5. Choose "iLo Installation Queue" and OK. At this point you should see the firmware installing. Reboot the system when completed.

Let us know if it works.

Thanks,

gustenar

Hi sergeisokolov,

Please follow the suggestions shared by gustenar.

Also share the SSD Model number to confirm.

Thank you

Re: HPGG vs HPGE revisions of SSD firmware

@gustenar  Thanks for the recommendation, I'll try that at the earliest opportunity.

@ksram  We have the following SSD models that may require HPGG firmware: VK001920GWEZE (HPGE), MK001920GWHRU (HPGE).
