Query: HPE SAN Switch firmware upgrades

Suppose there are two fabrics with three switches in each fabric for a dual fabrics setup.  Switch 1 connects to switch 2 and switch 2 connects to switch 3. Each host has dual connections, one to each fabric but we are not sure whether redundancy is working.  If we cannot upgrade the SAN switch firmware during mainteance window, what can be done to minimize impact?  Should we connect Switch 1 to Switch 3 for form a loop in case non disgruptive firmware upgrades does not work as expected?  Are there anything special that needs to be configured on the switches? Loop prevention is automatic?

Assuming we are working with SN6600B, SN6000B, SN3600B series.  Thank you!
