HPE Synergy - adding uplink ports to an existing LIG

Hi community,

We are using a HPE cluster of two chassis, each having 2 VCs. The cluster as a whole is connecting to the external Ethernet switches via two 10Gbps ports (one on each VC of each chassis), LACP-bonded within a single Logical Interconnect Group.

If we are to use two additional 10Gbps ports bundled within the same LIG, do we need to remove the existing ports or recreate the LIG? Or do we just simply add the new ports into the existing LIG?

Given that the external switches are ready for the additional ports in the bond (double-sided Cisco vPC), what steps and precautions should be taken on our Synergy side?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Tuan,

Adding Additional Uplinks to an existing LIG is possible.

All you have edit the LIG & Edit the Uplinkset or add uplink set and add desired uplink port.

Once done, It will prompt inconsistency on the Logical Enclosure and provide you an option to "Update from Group"

If you do update from Group, it would update the Logical Interconnect to take effect on settings.

Re: HPE Synergy - adding uplink ports to an existing LIG

Dear @Sharis ,

I am in same situation of this and need some help to ensure that our system will online on period add more 2 uplink port to Synergy cluster.

We are currently running 2 ethernet (10Gbps) port which plug on Q1.1 slot on each Virtual Connect SE 40Gb F8 Module for Synergy.
We need to add 2 new ethernet (10Gbps) port (one on each) to running Virtual Connect SE 40Gb F8 Module for Synergy.

My question are:

- Do we need to check prequiretes compatibility information of new plug devices (e.g firmware version of connector)?

- Which is recommend port using for new connections (e.g Q2, Q4, Q5, Q6)?

- How will OV detect or scan new plug connector/converter? Is it done automatically or we need to do scan steps? How long will it take to detect new device after plug in (please provide us an approximately estimate time)?

- Any discruption or connection loss on running compute module and its 's VMs when reapply configuration?

Hoping your help with many thanks!

Hi 'chaientran',

Greetings from HPE.

Please find the responses below:
- Do we need to check prequiretes compatibility information of new plug devices (e.g firmware version of connector)?
> If the add on connectivity is made to the same rack mounted switch, then all that needs to be checked is the physical connectivity which involves SFP part number etc

- Which is recommend port using for new connections (e.g Q2, Q4, Q5, Q6)?
> There is no such preferred port. You need to plan this as per your requirement.

- How will OV detect or scan new plug connector/converter? Is it done automatically or we need to do scan steps? How long will it take to detect new device after plug in (please provide us an approximately estimate time)?
> Whenever a new SFP is inserted, OneView detects it within a few minutes and then enables adding uplinks depending on the SFP type (Ethernet or FC).

- Any discruption or connection loss on running compute module and its 's VMs when reapply configuration?
> When performing 'update on group' there would be network outage for a short duration.

Hi @tech3d,

Thank you for your responses and suggestions!

As your mentioned, will OneView automatically detect when new FC SFP insert without any actions?

Re: HPE Synergy - adding uplink ports to an existing LIG

Hi chaientran,

The SFPs once plugged in are basically auto-detected by the Virtual Connect module and on the 'Interconnects' page if we select 'uplink ports' for the promary VC modules, and then click the little arrow on the left of the port, we will see the spare part number. Now all that is to be done is the additional configuration to use that port as part of any uplink set.
