Hi, friends here.
If you have a specialist interest in reading HighJackThis logs, please help me with understanding a log that I have attached here.
(1) Is it clean?
(2) There are quite few items that are marked as 'no file'. Are they redundant presence in the system?
I'm concerned because my broadband internet connection is getting rather unstable these days. It is repeatedly cut off unexpectedly. I cannot find the cause of the problem after running anti-virus (AntiVir Classic Personal) and anti-spyware programmes (Ad-Aware SE Plus, and Spybot S&D)in safe mode. I confess that I have used Yahoo Messenger (still in use) and Skype Messenger (already uninstalled) to chat with former colleagues and friends living in different parts of the world.
Many thanks.
John

Hi John,
I'm not seeing any notable spyware present in your Hijack This! log, although there are a couple of concerning items present :-
1) The Logitech Mouseware software
Do you have a wireless or other kind of fancy mouse? If not, chances are, you don't need the mouseware drivers. I noticed all sorts of unusual pop-ups, slow-downs and irritating messages when I installed the driver CD that came with my last Logitech mouse. Removed it all and let Windows install its own driver for the mouse, and all was just fine.
2) The "ProtocolDefault" entries
The way you have Internet Explorer configured is hazardous - it will allow any remote webpage to run scripts and software on your PC as though it was a webpage hosted on your PC. Go into the "Internet Settings" control panel, into the "Security" tab and reset the security setting on all zones by clicking their respective "Default" buttons.
As a further suggestion, try using Mozilla Firefox; it is a more secure browser as it is not as heavily integrated into the operating system as Internet Explorer is. Plus, it is regularly updated, and is free! http://www.getfirefox.com
Other than that, your unexpected internet disconnections may be related to a problem with your SpeedTouch *DSL driver - try uninstalling and reinstalling the driver, but failing that, contact your Internet Service Provider and see what they can do for you.
I would personally remove Yahoo! Messenger, as it installs a lot of other little applets by default - but seeing as you're using it, there's not much you can use as an alternative. I don't believe Skype is as bad for installing other applets as Y! is.
Hope this helps!

Re: HighJackThis log
Hi, Graeme,
Many thanks for your help. I have followed your advice about the Internet settings and clicked 'Default' for all the zones.
I do have a wireless mouse which proves more handy than the touch pad on the laptop. I use IE only when I want to search for Windows updates. Otherwise I have been using Mozilla Firefox. I shall consider uninstalling Yahoo Messenger.
According to your reading of the log, the system of my laptop is generally clean. Are I right in saying this? (I was concerned about the items marked with 'no file' etc.)
Many thanks once again.
