Routing and VLAN Tagging over same link on Procurve?

Routing and VLAN Tagging over same link on Procurve?

Can I do both Routing and VLAN tagging on the same link on Procurve switches? I know it is possible, but is this is a recommended/safe practice?

See the attached photo for my "simplified" scenario.  Basically, I have 4 schools routed by a core switch.  I also need to pass a single voice vlan to each school.  It seems like putting the routing and tagging on the same port mixes layer 2 and layer 3.

Any help would be much appreciated

That works fine, but as far as the design goes - I don't like it much.

Each site should have Data and Voice VLANs that go together.

If you have 1 Data VLAN per site, then you should have 1 Voice VLAN per site to go with it.

Having 1 Data VLAN per site, then having 1 Voice VLAN for all sites isn't very logical.

I agree. This network was originally designed with no routing at the schools, all vlans are defined on the core. I am changing it to the design I detailed to improve performance. It's not an option to change the existing phone system design.

Thanks for the input
