HP MSA 2040 HD amber light

Hello, I am seeking advise on a HD LED light that is amber. I have a Seagate SAS MDL 3TB online led that is green, but the fault light is solid amber. I have ran the show cache-parameter and show system with results stating for both controllers:

Unhealthy Component -------------------
Component ID: Virtual Pool A
Health: Degraded
Health Reason: The virtual pool is degraded.
Health Recommendation: - Ensure that spare disks are available. Reconstruction should start automatically.
- When the reconstruction is complete, replace the failed disk(s). (Look for event 8 in the event log to determine which disk(s) failed.)
- Disk groups that cannot find compatible spares will automatically move data to fault-tolerant components.

Unhealthy Component
-------------------
Component ID: Disk Group dgA01
Health: Degraded
Health Reason: The disk group is not fault tolerant. Reconstruction cannot start because there is no spare disk available of the proper type and size.
Health Recommendation: - Replace the disk with one of the same type (SAS SSD, enterprise SAS, or midline SAS) and the same or greater capacity. For continued optimum I/O performance, the replacement disk should have performance that is the same as or better than the one it is replacing.
- Configure the new disk as a spare so the system can start reconstructing the vdisk. - To prevent this problem in the future, configure one or more additional disks as spare disks.

What should I be concern with before I replace the drive and let it re-build?

Hi,

show system command output should have ideally reported the failed disk status as well.

Please issue the command show disks and check whether the slot number of the drive with amber LED is listed.

If a drive has completely failed, it could disappear from MSA web management interface (SMU) as well as command line outputs.

Re: HP MSA 2040 HD amber light

Hello ArunKKR, ran show disks and displayed only 3 disk in the dgA01 virtual pool. I can see them from the front storage unit, all with green leds. However, a fourth disk in the second collum is the druve with the amber led. Does that mean the drive has degraded and does not show up in the show disks command?

Hi @dmoya,

The disk in slot 4 would be a faulty disk.

I believe that dgA01 is a RAID 5 disk group created using 4 disks.

You may go ahead and replace the faulty disk and configure the new disk as global spare.

This will ensure that the new disk joins the disk group and reconstruction starts.

Re: HP MSA 2040 HD amber light

Question  ArunKKR , is there a command that will me what kind of hard drive to buy. The management utility shows Seagate ST3000NM0023 but HP does carry that anymore. Once purcahsed it's a simple remove and insert?

Re: HP MSA 2040 HD amber light

Hi,

The spare part number of the replacement hard drive is 656102-001.
Part description: HP P2000 3TB 6G SAS 7.2K LFF (3.5- INCH) DUAL PORT HDD
HPE reseller might require the option part number :QK703A.

If the part is unavailable with reseller, you may either look for higher capacity hard drive or log an HPE support case to check for options to get original HPE hard drive.
MSA 2040 is an end of support life product and the chances of getting replacement parts might be less.
Hard drive is a hot pluggable part.
Once new hard drive is installed you could just configure it as global spare.

In the System topic, select Action > Change Global Spares.
Select the new disk to add as spare.
Click Change

The new disk will join disk group and reconstruction will start automatically.
