Re: HPE MSA 1040 SAN HDD Issue
We understand you have noticed "Disk - Degraded. The disk may contain invalid meta data." It generally indicates that drive in LEFTOVER state. Now question is you have seen this for how many drives? If multiple drives status shows LEFTOVER or failed then open a support case with HPE.
If this is for single drive only then look for number of hardware error in that drive. If there is no error then you can clear metadata and re-configure that drive as Spare drive for re-use.
Please check other drives hardware error as well because if same vdisk or VDG other drives having hardware error as well then vdisk reconstruction may not complete.
Hope this helps!

Also suggest you to explore below option and verify MSA healthcheck.
Download MSA Log File from the MSA Storage Management Utility (SMU)
Upload MSA Log File in the MSA Health Check website
Review Results by clicking through the tabs and saving the PDF report
Take Action and start improving your MSA availability
There is no cost to use the MSA Health Check. Upload your log file today and check the health status of your MSA.
