Re: Can't recognize operating system

Monty,

What is the actual error on your screen? Are you booting to No OS FOUND? or Inaccessible Boot Device? Do you know what BSOD you were getting when you had a memory dump? Also what memory do you have in the server?

Also what operating system are you running?

Re: Can't recognize operating system

Monty,

Replacing the memory may have been just a coincidence, or maybe it has a bad area, which caused it to corrupt the disk if something was written to disk from there...

Do you have the Emergency Repair Diskette? Maybe one of the boot files got trashed and could be fixed?

Might be worth a try, if you haven't already.

Also, I'd try putting back the original memory config, if that's an option and you haven't already done it, just to see if it makes a difference.

Good Luck!

Re: Can't recognize operating system

Running NT4 serv.pack 6.

Error is no operating system found. The reason I don't think it is the memory is because it worked for 36 hours after they installed the memory three weeks ago.??
The IT guys that have my computer right now are saying they can't figure out the problem.
I thought I could help them after reading some of this site. My computer knowledge is very low. But some of the answers they give, make me question there ability.
I need my machine working again, but I also want to know what is causing this...thanks for your time and help.

Re: Can't recognize operating system

Monty,

No Operating System found will not be caused by memory. The message will occur if:
you have no operating system, if your hard drive is not detected, if the hard drive is not in the correct boot priority, if your partition table is corrupt, if you have a tape in your tape drive, if your hard drive controller has failed.

Start with the simplest steps first and verify your boot order and if you have a tape backup make sure there isn't a tape inserted.

You can verify boot order by hitting F2 on Post when you first turn the server on. Then go into boot settings and hard drive priority and verify Sym53cXX is first if you are on the embedded controller or NetRaid if you have a netraid controller.
