Installing W2k Server on LH3
I have been all over the Net trying to find this answer. And many answers there have been. I am trying to install W2k Server on an LH3. Setup continues to hang when it comes to the "Setup is now starting Windows" and freezes. Here is my info.
Bios: 4.06.43 PL
NetRaid Bios: B.02.03
Some of the searches I have come across say I need to upgrade the BIOS, done. Then use the most current driver when installing W2k, no difference. I even went into the BIOS setup and changed the MP Specification Version from 1.4 to 1.1. Still no difference.
Does anyone have any clues as to what I might be missing?

Re: Installing W2k Server on LH3
- remove any hardware which is not needed to install a minimum operating system
- install latest BIOS update (you say you already did that)
- clear cmos (there's a dip switch on the processor/memory board)
- try to do a minimum os installation and see what happens
Does it show anything in hardware event log (you can view it via front panel) ?

I am assuming this is a new install and not an upgrade...and that you are not using the HP Navigator CD. Also, if you have added any PCI cards (particularly Adaptec) remove and then try install again.
Are you booting directly from the Microsoft 2000 CD? Have you tried the 4 diskette install?

Again, excuse me if you are doing this properly.

Re: Installing W2k Server on LH3
I am booting directly off a W2k Server CD. I have not tried the four diskettes. Would that really make a difference?
And for the F6, yes, I tried that one and installed the updated driver. It still hung afterwards.
Haven't flashing the CMOS either.
I will try everything at my first possible chance. I am slowly learning about these servers and do greatly appreciate your assistance.

Re: Installing W2k Server on LH3
Again I'm going to go to basics. Just so we all are sure: Did you go into NetRAID express tools (Ctrl-M) and configure your array? Did you initialize it?
Maybe go step by step for us in abreviated terms as to what you are doing. One note: If you are installing to the drives on a NetRAID adapter you HAVE to use the F6 and S to point to the NetRAID driver. Also, the driver has to be the one for the integrated NetRAID adapter listed on your server's page.

Re: Installing W2k Server on LH3
Everytime I try to load Windows 2000 server off the CD, it hangs on the "Starting Windows 2000" part. Here is what I have tried.
I updated the BIOS to 4.06.43 PL, the NetRaid was already at D.03.03. I have cleared the config several times (Pin 5 on the Processor / Memory Board). The only things mentioned in the Hardware log was the fans (all pulled out for easier access), one power supply (one not plugged in due to lack of plugs), and intrusion alert (got all the covers off). I have also removed all unnecessary equipment.
As for the NetRaid configuration, I have the first five drives setup as a Raid 5, with the 6th setup as Hot Spare. The Raid 5 was initialized and all information saved then rebooted.
When installing W2k Server, I press F6 at the beginning, select to install other drivers, then load the Integrated NetRaid drivers.
Everything runs fine till it gets to "Starting Windows 2000" part.
This is really stumping me. I am wondering if it is possible that something might be bad. Does HP have a tool to stress test this server?

Re: Installing W2k Server on LH3
The first thing that you should do is pull every PCI board this is in your server that you don't absolutely need. Don't pull any of the large RAID boards or the network cards, but pull any PCI cards that you can remove reasonably easily. The reason is that the original install is going to be insanely unstable. When I say insanely unstable, I mean if you move the mouse too fast then Windows 2000 will crash. I'm not kidding.
The first step is to identify every firmware update for your computer and install it. You MUST update the System BIOS, the NetRAID card, and anything else for which new firmware is available. Don't even think about trying to install Windows 2000 without doing these firmware updates -- it is a hopeless endeavor. Trust me.
The next thing you should do is to enter the BIOS setup for your NetRaid configuration, and take every drive offline except a single drive. Do not try to install Windows to a RAID array. Format the drive using the HP Netraid tools.
The next thing you should do is to make a set of Windows 2000 Server boot floppies. Do not try to boot off the CD -- it won't work.
You can get the boot disks here:
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm
Then you have to make a set of floppies that contain the specific RAID drivers that you will use in the Windows setup. I believe you hit F6 at the beginning of the Windows Setup process to install specific RAID drivers. My Netserver has a Netraid 3si -- yours may have a different board. Figure out what board it is and then find the specific installation info and drivers for it. It is usually listed under the system that you have. HP Server drivers for different systems are listed here:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Product.jsp?locale=en_US&prodTypeId=15351
Once the firmware is updated for all your system boards and you have all your floppies ready, you can begin the install.
Boot from the floppies, and then use the Win2k CD to enter the setup mode. Press F6 to install the 3rd party RAID drivers so that your NetRaid card and hard drives will be recognized in the setup process. Once Win2k goes through its setup process, it will show you the available drive and ask you to partition/format it. Do this.
You should then be able to install Windows to this drive. Once Windows 2000 is installed, it will be very unstable without the service packs. Your goal will be to gain network access by setting up your internet connection, and then using Windows Update to update windows. Alternatively, you can run service packs from CD, but I found it easier to try to get the networking running and use Windows Update. Either way, be prepared to have Win2k crash an insane amount of times while trying to do this. I think I must have restarted at least 10 times trying to install the updates. The good news is that each successive update makes the system more stable, so you will have exponential returns for your investment of time.
Once you have the Windows Updates installed, the system should be stable enough that you can download all the other Netserver driver updates and diagnostic tools. I wouldn't suggest using anything from the CD's if you don't have to. Try to get the latest versions.
Hopefully this helps. I should note that I consider myself pretty proficient with computers, and it took me 2 full days to get Win2k running on my Netserver. The system stability is literally zero unless you update the firmware, and then windows stability is terrible until the service packs are installed.
Let me know if you need any further help. I hope this guide has been somewhat helpful.

Re: Installing W2k Server on LH3
x:\bootdisk\makeboot.exe a:
Note: Makeboot works on all Windows versions including the older 16-bit. Makebt32.exe can be used on 32-bit OS versions.
