The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\sym_u32.
This card is connected to two 36gb drives onboard that are mirrored, and to a Rack Storage 12 with two RIAD 5 arrays. All the latest firmware and updates and pathes have been applied from both HP and Microsoft. The OS on the server is win2k server. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You

Have a look at this forum post:

I'm not sure if you're using the manufacturer's driver or the MS driver, however, this information may help.

Re: Receiving the The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\sym_u32. message
When did this error start? I would suspect drivers with 2000. Check for the sym_u3.sys driver in winnt\system32\drivers and look at the modified date. You should have a modified date of 7/18/2000. You can get the driver here: http://h20004.www2.hp.com/keeper_rnotes/bsdmatrix/matrix50456.html
You want the drivers for the LP2000 for MS Windows 2000 .74MB
Reload the driver which is on the first floppy a:\winnt\miniport and see if that resolves your issue.

That is the MS driver.. Changing that driver will most likely resolve your error. I look forward to hearing the results either way..

Re: Receiving the The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\sym_u32. message
Thanks for the idea, but that didn't work. After the replacement of the driver, the error messages appear less frequently, about 2-4 times an hour, but they are still occurring. I also changed the thorough put for the SCSI drives from 160/mb to 80/mb, because the drives are SCSI 2. There is also nothing else hooked up to the RAID 4 card other than the 3 hard drive arrays.

What is connected to the Symbios Controller?

A rack storage 12 is connected to that contoller, as well as the server's internal drives.

If your internal storage and RS/12 is on the symbios controller then what is on your NetRaid 4m?

Re: Receiving the The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\sym_u32. message
No, the internal storage and the Rack Storage are connected to the Net Raid 4. I take the error message if coming from the onboard SCSI controller, not the netraid 4 card. On the onboard SCSI controller I have a NEXSAN ATABOY disk array. It's kinda of like a RS 12, but for backup storage. I think we are getting somewhere, I have making the SCSI MB speed changes on the wrong card. As Homer Simpson says "DOOH"!!

Re: Receiving the The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\sym_u32. message
Do you receive that error if you have the NEXSAN ATABOY disconnected from the Server?? Its also a remote possibility that you are getting false errors similar to this issue: http://forums.itrc.hp.com/cm/QuestionAnswer/1,,0x1031c4c76f92d611abdb0090277a778c,00.html

Re: Receiving the The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\sym_u32. message
I had read that before, that was why I changed the settings on the netraid 4 card. Now I realize I have to change the settings on the onboard card, and that will be my next troubleshooting step.

SolutionThat post on the false error had nothing to do with changing the symbios speeds. It was in reference to false errors off the symbios controller where the Tape Drive was functioning but giving false errors. What I was hypothesizing is you may be getting a similar communication issue with this other device. The false error was resolved with a firmware flash on the DAT40. If changing the sync speed doesn't change the symptoms for you and the device appears to be functioning normal then you may have this same issue which would need to be addressed by Nexsan.
Good luck..

Re: Receiving the The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Scsi\sym_u32. message
Thanks for your help in trying to solve this problem. I ended up changing the the speed on the card to 80/mb, as well as the speed on the NEXSAN unit to 80/mb, and so far everything has been quiet on the server. Thanks again.
