HP Serverstorage management software issues.

My customer has a Proliant DL380 G4 NAS Server running Windows Storage Server 2003 R2. The event logs are filling up with the following errors from the HP Storage Server Management Service.

Event ID: 4160. Failed to retreive logical disks. An unexpected exception was thrown.

Event ID: 0. Failed to get the scheduled shutdown action. An exception was thrown.

Also getting connection timeout mesages when using the HP storage server management console.

Any help appreciated.

Johnny

Re: HP Serverstorage management software issues.

Johnny,

Exceptions from the HP Storage Server Management service are logged to a file at:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Hewlett-Packard\Storage Server Management\hpss_exc.log

Could you find the exceptions that correspond to these events and post them here?

Re: HP Serverstorage management software issues.

I have the same problem with a Proliant Dl380 G5 NAS running Windows Storage Server 2003 R2.
Looking at the eventlog file suggested above gives the following:
Exception logged at: 4/10/2007 7:47:55 AM
corresponding to Event ID 4160
System.Management.ManagementException
Generic failure

Stack Trace:
at System.Management.ManagementException.ThrowWithExtendedInfo(ManagementStatus errorCode)
at System.Management.ManagementObjectCollection.ManagementObjectEnumerator.MoveNext()
at HP.Mmc.Server.Storage.get_LogicalDisks()
----
This is repeated every 2 minutes until a reboot is done. The server is unresponsive over Terminal Services as well during this.

Re: HP Serverstorage management software issues.

This appears to be an issue with WMI. We'll look into this problem. Have you seen this more than once?

If it happens again, could you please try restarting the "Windows Management Instrumentation" service, then restart the "HP Storage Server Management" service and let me know if that fixes it?

Thanks,
David

Re: HP Serverstorage management software issues.

It has happened at four different occasions. The time between has varied between 2 weeks and five days.
Next time I will try your suggested actions.
I should add that I have installed SP2 on the server and only afterwards (did not know about it) ran the prepare for SP that is available.
The storage server was shipped with R2 and SP1 so I hope that was not as much of a problem.
I have logged this with HP as there also is a warning LED on the MSA30 that is always on despite there are no warnings to Systems Insight Manager or the System Management Homepage.

Re: HP Serverstorage management software issues.

It has happened again, now with the interval of about 24-36 hours.
Restarting the Windows Instrument Management service and then the HP storage server did not help.
As we also lose the connectivity to Remote Desktop I suspect something like a memory leak somewhere.
Any help appreciated.
