we are looking to replace an aging file server with 2 1200's. Have had difficulty getting answers to some questions from distributors and HP and am looking for some help.
1. We want to replicate data one way for DR purposes. Can we use server2003 DFS or do we need the replication software(openview storage replicator??). If we need this software would we need 2 copies/licenses?
2. Can it be used as a replacement for the existing print server
3. Snapshots , does this require at least 50% free space, from these snapshots can we restore individual files?(BE or ARCserve)
any guidance would be appreciated

Solution
1) Openview Storage Replicator formely NAS data copy is required. There are other solutions but this is equivalent in price, function, ease of use and support. Two copies required.
2)NAS based on Windows Storage Server adds support for Print services, although without shared storage, clustered print support would be tricky.
3) Doesn't actually require 50% if you are sure about volume of changes, would suggest that an absolute minimum of 25% is reserved and is very carefully monitored if you wish to go down this route. From the snapshots you can mount and copy individual files. Do remember however that the snapshot without the original data, is no use. Two scenarios to help with explanation are:
a) User deletes file - restore by copying from snapshot, or restore idividual file from BE etc.
b) Loose Original data drive - restore from backup (all)
Might also want to read-up on ASR (Automated System recovery) a nice new feature in windows storage server.
