An ideal technology partnership leads to better patient outcomes with nuclear medicine
The field of nuclear medicine is at the forefront of modern healthcare. The practice uses radioactive substances to help diagnose and treat diseases, offering a unique and detailed view into organ function and cellular activity. Nuclear medicine employs a range of scanners, tracers, and cameras to produce detailed visualizations of different parts of the body. As a result, it can provide precisely targeted treatments for conditions including cancer and thyroid disorders. This rapidly advancing field is also yielding breakthroughs in the diagnosis and treatment of complex neurological conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
Hermes Medical Solutions (HMS) is a software company entirely focused on developing innovations for nuclear medicine. Its Hermia molecular imaging software brings together multiple types of scans into an all-in-one environment. It offers physicians more complete and unified views and simplified workflows regardless of the scanning technique (PET, SPECT, CT, and MRI) or camera manufacturer used. This, in turn, enables clinicians to work more efficiently and improve quality of care.
Groundbreaking medical solutions require leading-edge technology
Naturally, HMS’ cutting-edge nuclear medicine solutions require extremely reliable and high-performance hardware to process and store scan image data—systems which can often be difficult for overburdened hospital IT staff to manage. Per Thyr, Hermes Medical Solutions vice president of system development, sums up the dilemma:
“Nuclear medicine is an advanced field of medicine, and it is constantly developing. This places challenging requirements on our software. We need the clinical knowledge to understand our customers’ needs as well as a multitier technical infrastructure that integrates with each hospital’s IT. And everything has to be seamless—our customers don’t want to worry about the technical details, they just want a solution that works.”
For its part, HMS understands that its core competency is not in sourcing, configuring, deploying, and maintaining high-performance hardware stacks, either.
“We are a software company,” Thyr points out. “We shouldn’t need a factory or warehouse. In the past, we were buying hardware, setting up the systems ourselves, and shipping the final solution to the customer. This was not efficient. What we needed instead was a partner that could prepare the systems for us to load our software and let them handle all the rest.”
An HPE OEM partnership solves hardware challenges
This is where Avnet Integrated—an HPE OEM channel partner—comes into the picture. Avnet Integrated handles all aspects of the hardware that Hermia systems run on. They helped Hermes Medical Solutions simplify Hermia down to three base servers: HPE ProLiant DL360 and HPE ProLiant DL380 application servers and HPE ProLiant DL 180 database server.
Avnet Integrated configures each server with the appropriate storage capacity and network capabilities based on individual customer requirements. After HMS loads and optimizes the Hermia software via secure VPN, Avnet Integrated manages the delivery and deployment of the solution with the healthcare provider.
Great collaborations let everyone do what they are best at
This mutually beneficial collaboration frees up everyone involved to focus on their specialties.
- HPE provides a comprehensive portfolio of best-of-breed compute, storage, and networking hardware.
- Avnet Integrated offers its vast hardware deployment and delivery expertise, as well as admin services.
- Hermes Medical Solutions is able to devote its full attention to developing software innovations that advance the practice of nuclear medicine.
- And, most importantly, streamlined workflows and improved imaging results allow hospitals and clinicians to focus on providing excellent patient care.
Partnering on the future
This collaboration also sets Hermes Medical Solutions up to easily expand its global footprint and speed its time to market with new solutions. Expert partners like Avnet Integrated help HMS take full advantage of HPE’s portfolio of edge-to-cloud technologies in its future offerings. Avnet Integrated’s global infrastructure also ensures the consistent worldwide availability of platform hardware as HMS expands into new markets.
Meanwhile, advances in artificial intelligence are further accelerating the pace of breakthroughs in nuclear medicine. Solutions like Hermia that consolidate data from a range of different imaging sources are helping hospitals integrate scan data into next-generation systems that leverage AI and machine learning to improve patient outcomes.
There are multiple paths to partner success
HPE OEM Solutions also provides another avenue for software-focused vendors like HMS to provide complete, turnkey solutions to their customers while keeping core business resources focused on software innovation.
The HPE V-OEM program enables software companies to offer customers their IP in integrated solutions built with a fully validated mix of hardware, software, and worldwide support from HPE. It’s designed to help software businesses rapidly scale and meet the rising demand for turnkey products without needing to involve themselves in the hardware details.
It’s clear to HMS, however, that its ideal collaboration involves both HPE OEM Avnet Integrated and HPE. As Thyr puts it:
“Avnet Integrated and HPE are great partners in that they always want to provide the best solution for our needs. Avnet Integrated put together a smooth, efficient workflow, and we have the added strength of HPE engineering to deliver a reliable platform for hospitals. I was looking for this kind of partnership, but to be honest, I didn’t know it would be this good.”
