Generative Artificial Intelligence: impact in 2023 & the future
A few years ago, when I first read an article on Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI), little did I know that this brilliant technology may someday revolutionize a wide range of industries and impact our lives in countless ways. Generative AI is suddenly everywhere after it recently exploded in popularity. Ever wondered how did this technology become the latest buzzword? Generative AI has come a long way since its early beginnings, and it continues to evolve at a rapid pace. Although introduced back in the 1960s, this technology became popular in 2014 with the advent of generative adversarial networks (GANs)- "a type of machine learning algorithm -- that generative AI could create convincingly authentic images, videos and audio of real people".
What is Generative AI?
Generative AI is a subfield of artificial intelligence that generates new content, chat responses, designs, synthetic data, or deep fakes. It has a workflow that runs on algorithms & identifies the underlying pattern of an input to generate similar content.
I believe Generative AI will be big in 2023. From creating realistic virtual worlds to automating repetitive tasks, generative AI has the potential to greatly improve our productivity and enhance our daily experiences. As per a new survey from Salesforce Inc., 57% of IT professionals believe that generative AI would be a game changer for their businesses and would help better serve customers by taking advantage of data, while 67% of senior IT leaders surveyed said they will be prioritizing the technology over the next 18 months. These statistics are proof enough to show how this technology has gotten people excited about a new wave of creativity.
Generative AI- the future possibilities & case studies:
Based on my knowledge, understanding, & research, I firmly believe that Generative AI will most certainly be impactful on people like you and me in the coming years. Gartner has declared generative AI as one of the most disruptive and rapidly evolving technologies of recent times.
The application of generative AI in enterprises has just started to unfold along with a world of opportunities, as many experts believe that this technology can help solve the most complex problems that today's businesses face. As it continues to develop, Generative AI will likely have a broad and far-reaching impact on many areas of society and industry.
In 2021, several fashion brands invested approximately 1.7% of their income in emerging technologies. Moreover, they estimate the figure will rise between 3.0% and 3.5% by 2030. While the Japanese tech company, DataGrid used GANS technology to create models that can change bodily, another startup named Lalaland makes hyper-realistic virtual fashion models driven by generative AI for use on e-commerce platforms.
As an art enthusiast, I would say, Generative AI is the art's next big thing. AI-generated art is popularizing & creating realistic images and animations. One of the best examples is the renowned artist Sofia Crespo, whose works are created by Generative AI. The Berlin-based artist uses artificial neural networks to generate illustrations that "at first glance, resemble Louis Renardโs 18th Century renderings or the exotic specimens of Albertus Sebaโs compendium. Upon closer inspection, though, the colorful renderings reveal unsettling combinations: two fish are conjoined with a shared fin, flower petals appear feather-like, and a study of butterflies features insects with missing wings and bizarrely formed bodies".
The Caution Alert?
As much as I believe how impactful Generative AI could be for the future world, I also sense biases towards this technologyโs positive benefits. However, there are many experts who thinks otherwise. Author Yuval Harari believes that humans are at risk of becoming 'hacked" if artificial intelligence does not become better regulated. According to Harari, "Artificial intelligence is now poised to surpass human intelligence. Netflix tells us what to watch and Amazon tells us what to buy. Eventually within 10 or 20 or 30 years such algorithms could also tell you what to study at college and where to work and whom to marry and even whom to vote for every dollar and every minute we invest in improving artificial intelligence, it would be wise to invest a dollar and a minute in advancing human consciousness".
The excitement amongst entrepreneurs surrounding generative AI is warranted, however, one needs to exercise caution while investing in the right tools and resources as this technology is still at its nascency.
One of the biggest risks will be the dangers of synthetically generated content. As generative techniques will be utilized to create malicious content, "simply detecting that an AI created something will not be enough to deem it malicious". To resolve this, there have to be "mechanisms that can understand and derive meaning from writing, images, and videos".
It can also be difficult to determine who is responsible for the content generated by a generative AI system, and this can sometimes lead to a lack of accountability for any negative consequences.
The outlook for generative AI appears bright, however, it is not devoid of certain challenges that experts need to overcome. I believe this technology may usher in a new era of applications, and we may see many exciting developments in this field in the years to come.
