How do we leverage Internet of Things for efficient patient care?
The global healthcare industry is advancing by leaps and bounds. Several technology innovations have helped the industry undergo radical changes, thereby enhancing patients' outcomes. One of the most impactful advances is the Internet of Things (IoT) that created smart spaces to improve patient care in a number of ways. Through the IoT, clinicians, care providers, doctors and patients can access more precise and detailed information, making every subsequent reference faster and more accurate. It can also help older patients stay in their homes longer instead of moving to a care facility, reduce the length of hospital stays, and even save a patientтАЩs life.
The advances in communications via the internet keeps patients better connected to doctors via remote monitoring and virtual visits, while IoT enabled smart wearables make it possible to continually monitor patient conditions and symptoms. Imagine a patient wakes up in the morning and uses his smart wearable to check his heart rate while a safe device he ingested (a smart ingestible) monitors internal signs to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary. This makes healthcare tracking so simple and more streamlined, especially when it involves remote care.
IoT smart devices can track the symptoms of a disease, log the symptoms in a database, and support clinicians in prescribing immediate care options, all while determining what sort of facility or specialist could best provide aid.
Medical IoT will extend to patients' homes, sending vital information to clinicians about how their patients are recovering at home or merely managing their health. Combining medical IoT with video-based telehealth services will enable patients to receive care in the comfort of their own homes, or wherever they may be, without having to travel great distances for in-person care. This combined approach will create operational efficiencies for healthcare organizations while saving patients time and money (e.g., travel expenses, parking, lost wages, and child care).
As the medical industry makes the shift from sick care to health care under value-based health initiatives, healthcare organizations will leverage the medical IoT and virtual care technology to create new care delivery models that are most efficient and cost-effective and provide more convenient access to care, thus improving the patient experience.
