11.00 hangs on query of disk during installation

I have a C100 workstation that I installed 2-4GB and 1-2GB HVD drives in. I went to install 11.00 from scratch and during the first part of the install, it hangs quering the segate 4GB drive.(has a HP logo on it, sorry I don't remember the driver number, I'm at work and the w/s is at home)

It sees the path of all drives, querys the first 2 without problems. The 2 4GB drives have never been in this w/s and I've gone over the pin confiugration several times on the seagate drive.

Has anyone seen this before? I let it sit over 3 hours and it still hangs, to where I have to power down the w/s.

TIA
Joe

Hi,

These disk's may need a firmware upgrade !

Re: 11.00 hangs on query of disk during installation

Check you haven't duplicate scsi addresses.
Do this by interrupting the boot process and running the command sea at the isl prompt.
If this hangs it would indicate that you have a duplicate scsi address. If not it could be a dead disk. Remove the disk and try the search again.

Re: 11.00 hangs on query of disk during installation

Hi Joseph:

May be a bad disk ? If you suspect that, remove it and install the OS with other two disks. Once you done with that, then add this hard disk and check it with stm, dd, ioscan, diskinfo etc.

Re: 11.00 hangs on query of disk during installation

This seems to be a SCSI address conflict between drives.

Try to check SCSI ID on disk drives. Just scan the drives from BOOT_ADMIN prompt by "sea". Check how many drives you are able to scan. If you get all the drives, then it is not a SCSI ID problem. You mmight have to look at another thing like Disk drives and Hardware compatibility etc.

Re: 11.00 hangs on query of disk during installation

The ID is set correctly, sea produces ID's 4,5,and 6. The disk could be bad, since I bought it second-hand I've never seen it actually work, but I was told it came out of a working piece of HP hardware.

I think the firmware might be the solution, I've only done PC bios etc, never a HD firmware update. Is it possible to do that kind of upgrade in the field?

Thanks for the fast responses!!!

Hi,

Never done a fw upgrade of disk's myself, but it might be possible !

Re: 11.00 hangs on query of disk during installation

Hi Joseph

Another way to go throught the issue is to discconnect all teh drives and try connecitng jsut the drive you to load the OS on there can be 2 possiblites :

1. Either the drive is good in that case just load the OS and after the OS is loaded you can reconnect the disk and add space once they are sensed.

2. If the the disk is bad then you have the source of the problem , change the disk and go to step 1.

Re: 11.00 hangs on query of disk during installation

Hi Joseph:

Before you start upgrading the firmware, first make sure that it is the porblem. Connect one-by-one and observe the OS install progress. Check for SCSI cables, terminators etc. You will get a better idea if you do the install on any of the disk and then add more disks. This way you will have more options and tools to perform the checks.

Check this manuals about C class workstations:
