11 i Install Doubts

I am very familiar with 11.0 Installations on RP servers. I have a new assignment where i
have to install 11 i in rp 7420 machine. Here are my questions...

1. I have 3 install CD's(1 of 3, 2 of 3 and 3 of 3). In all 11.0 installations i used to install just one install/update recovery and support plus. How is 11 i different?

2. The server has just arrived and connected to the console. So i just have to type boot path to the cdrom from the main menu right? I do not seem to get the usual main menu..is this part different from 11.0?

3. There are 2 internal disks (these 2 shd be the root mirrors i guess..also can mirroing be done after the install? and also will the install automatically select the primary and alt boot disks from these 2 internal disks?

4. Please also let me know if there are some other points i have to remember?

Hi Brian,

Installing 11.0 or 11i is absolutely same. 7410 and 7420 is also allmost same.

1. Your new OS might have come in two-three DVD's where it has only one Application DVD,one support Plus CD/DVD,One Recovery CD. It depends on the version you have got. Latest is June2004. It is same as your 11.00 in HPUX 11i there are some filesets which are different and you will not come to know in general about this.

2. This what you are talking about is the hardware related. It is similar in all HP RISC hardware. Interrupt auto boot by pressing any key. Then give sea at PDC prompt. From the output give path of DVD when media allready inserted in drive. Say bo p1 or so.

3. You will have to install OS on one disk first. Do not gorget to select disk with highest SCSI ID. Then after loading OS if you have got a license for MirrorUx generate codeword and install it. If it is mission critical OS then Mirror Ux is built into it.

(Also I suggest to take ignite backup of existing OS (Factory Loaded as it may have latest patch level applied) or you may load OS on the other disk then one at which it is allready there as anyway you are going to mirror them later.

4. Take care to use manually adjust File System sizes in root volume groups depending upon your requirements.( Do not use default sizes) Also do remember to alter default Volume group parameters for further expansions depending upon your expandability.

hi brian,

yes both installs are very similar. its just 11i has a lot more to install as standard and does really depend upon which environment you are installing. It also takes up alot more hard drive space for the extra software. It also installes the diagnostics and patch bundles as standrad so no need for the support plus at insatll time, there incorporated into the 3cd's.

when the 74x0's are connected to the console initially they default to go straight into the MP. this is a variant of the gsp on older servers (cntrol B). You will need to log in then just type co to take you back to the pdc level where you can navigate the menu's to install the os.

mirroring the root disc has to be done after install with miirordisc/ux a lic product unless you have a hardware raid card installed.

Also as said before me, check your vg/lvol sizes? you may want to increase them now for future while you are doing the install, easier to do now than later and have to down the system to increase them.

Just some add-ons:
1. 11i v1 comes on CDs or DVD
11i v2 comes on DVD only.
And on that system you can actually install 11i v2 PI.

3. Mirror is not a part of the installation kernel. So DO NOT select more than one disk for installation as will have to install mirror afterwards and then set it up.

This is what happens..I go to the console and could not see anything..then i power on the console again and press ctrl d for 5 secs and then it defaults and when i enter return nothing happens..not sure what is wrong.

Hi Brian,

If your machine has not booted there will be nothing on console. The only messages that appear on console come while the machine is power recycled & Login prompt comes only when machine booting sequence is over. So just power recycle the machine and see the console for some time. Also if you have multiple MP cards in your system then connect to other one and see.

Hi Brian,

Which console have you connected to ? Your system have a MP card which is in the right hand corner in back of your system parallel to two big colling Fans. It has got one MP serial port (25 PIN D-Type Connector)and from this port comes out a cable which has three 9 pin d-Type connectors coming out which marks on them 1. Remote 2. Console 3. UPS . You have to connect your serial cable of console to this console port only.

I doubt you might be connecting it to some wrong port.
