11i or 11.0 ?

I have the opportunity to install an upgrade from 11.0 to 11i on a non-production server.
Created from ignite waiting to move data to it.

I can stay on 11.0 if I want
Should I upgrade to 11i ?

next if so
Upgrade or clean install?

Re: 11i or 11.0 ?

Hi Larry,

It depent on the time you like to keep your applications up and running. UX11 is supported until end 2006 if i am correct.
You have some extra features with 11i (like vpars, online kernel parameters (few), etc ask the marketing department ) but if you do not need them why bother.

If you decide go for 11i i would advise a clean install. And i will be not alone....

Re: 11i or 11.0 ?

Hi,

No question about it - go to 11.11.
And again no question - cold install.
11.0 is already on the path to obsolescence & even though the 11.0 -> 11.11 upgrade has a greater chance of success than the 10.2 -> 11.0 EVER had, the cold-install will be a LOT less painful & gives you a chance to clean the slate so to speak.

Re: 11i or 11.0 ?

Given the choice, I would opt for 11.11 and install the latest patch bundles. The buffer cache and vxfs performance is noticeably better in 11.11. The handful of dynamic kernel tunables are also a big plus.

You should really be able to cold install and load all the patchsets in under 4 hours even on a dog of a box.

If you built 11.0 with the default size for / and /stand then don't even consider the upgrade; I always generously oversize those filesystems and I've yet to have a failure.

Here's the trade-off: Cold Install -- 4 hours and I know (confidence > .95) you will be okay. Upgrade - 2 hours and you will probably (confidence > .65) be okay.

If it ain't broke, I can fix that.

Is there an echo in the house ...

Forget 11, go to 11i
Besides 11 is being phased out and 11i has so many more features.

Re: 11i or 11.0 ?

This system and 8 others I need to install 11i on, has no cd.
I remote mount the cd for upgrades.

Can I install from a cdrom on another server?

Maybe create a SD on another system then install ?

When I get 11i on one should I create an ignite tape to ignite the other idential servers?
Sorry so many questions!

Re: 11i or 11.0 ?

Unless the hardware is REALLY slow 11.11 (11i) is the way to go.

At the end of February, 11.00 will no longer be sold.

Support dies on 12/31/2006.

I set up systems for longer lifecycles so I would not under any circumstancs use 11.00 in your shoes.

11i is more secure, more reliable and its going to be around for a long time.

Re: 11i or 11.0 ?

Yes, go with 11i.

For remote installs - ie no cd in server - install an Ignite Server and then install HP-UX over the network. Basic - you interupt the boot sequence, then

> boot lan.nn.n.nn.n install

where: nn.n.nn.n is your Ignite server├в s IP address.
The system then begins to load the install kernel from the network server. This should take 3 to 5 minutes.

Then follow the normal install procedures...
