Good Afternoon,
I recently bought a HP Visualize workstation with 10.20 loaded. Here are my questions.
1. When I'm logged on as root and I type something incorrectly, the computer beeps extremely loud. For example, at the command line, if I were to press backspace more times than needed, I would get a loud beep for every exceeding backspace. When I am logged on as a normal user, I do not get those beeps, I'm thinking that it's because normal users dont have the access to that dev file.
2. Do I need to have a .sh_history file in my home in order to be able to bring up older commands ? (My guess is yes)

If you don't have what you want, want what you have.

Solution
Mark,
1. Bring up Style Manager - it's the icon on the front panel with the artist's pallette on it. You can adjust the volume from within Style Manager.
2. Yes, though it can be anywhere you want - controlled by $HISTFILE.
Good luck,
Pete

Re: 2 Questions: 1. I'm getting Beeps as Root 2. Command line editing.
Hi,
just a little sidenote: It is not reconmended to have the .sh_history file on a NFS filesystem.
I had a problem where a user couldn't login any more. After removing the .sh_history from the NFS filesystem and setting the $HSITFILE to a local file everything was fine again.
Hope this helps
Regards Stefan
