3COM Network adapter on B2000 with HPUX 11.11

Hi everybody!

I've a big question for you! ;-)

I recently bought an HP B2000 workstation...200Euro for 1GB ram, fx4pro video e 9Gb disk...everything is ok but I'd like to install a second Network adapter...
I found an old nic at home, it's a 3Com

10b79805 ethernet 3c59x 3c980-TX 10/100baseTX NIC [Python-T]

But hpux 11.11 doesn't recognize it.
I suppose I need the correct drivers but...where can I find them? Does they exist?

Thanks in advance

Emanuele

Re: 3COM Network adapter on B2000 with HPUX 11.11

Hi,

It might be the card of some old PC. Which will not be supported here because you will not get drivers for it. For all supported network cards you have network drivers in application CD's that come along with OS. Just see any of application CD root and you will find a text file containing the contents of all the CD's.

Re: 3COM Network adapter on B2000 with HPUX 11.11

So, I MUST buy an HP Network Adapter?!?

I'd like to put a "typical" NIC from the adapters I used on normal PC...

Isn't it possible?

Thanks again.

Re: 3COM Network adapter on B2000 with HPUX 11.11

the nic is not the problem, the driver is the problem (unless you can write it yourself)

http://docs.hp.com/en/5187-1843/ch02s03.html

look at the software for the nic's.

Hi,

Yes, Not sure about this particular card but every card which is used in PCs can not be used in workstations. You can select from Robert's link hardware supported on your B Class workstations. But it is also advised to have one from HP as to configure and making others functional on HP's RISC hardware one will have tough time.

Re: 3COM Network adapter on B2000 with HPUX 11.11

Having EISA or PCI slots in an HP-UX box doesn't meamn that any card will work. Just like a PC, if there is no driver, the card is useless. Almost no manufacturer writes drivers for HP-UX so the only cards you can use are HP-branded. And like many LAN and disk controller cards, there is often special firmware used in these special cards. This is not unusual in the world of non-Intel Unix workstations. You should be able to find useable cards on eBay or at used equipment resellers.

Re: 3COM Network adapter on B2000 with HPUX 11.11

Thanks to everybody!

The really question I'd like to know was "does standard NIC (used in pc) work on HPUX workstation?"

And you all answered my question!

So, thanks to everybody..now I'll be looking for an HP NIC....sob sob...how much will I pay...

Re: 3COM Network adapter on B2000 with HPUX 11.11

Hi Emanuele,

Cost depends on the vendor from where you can get it. It is also different in different parts of the globe. So as Bill stated you try some similar vendors near about you.

Moreover, if your query is resolved assign points and close the thread.

Re: 3COM Network adapter on B2000 with HPUX 11.11

Specifically, the HP-UX drivers from HP look for HP-specific subvendor IDs on the cards and will only claim those cards with matching subvendor IDs. Even if they are based on the same chipsets.

HP cards will be claimed by drivers in other OSes - for example, Linux drivers will (generally) quite happily claim a card with an HP subvendor ID.

The devresource/dspp site should have a reference driver one could leverage if they were inspired to write a driver. I'm not sure if it was based on Tulip (Digitial 2114X) or "e100" (Intel) NICs.

I've been suggested where to find the proper NIC.
