Re: about sinle user mode

YOu can't "log into" single-user mode. You must BOOT into it. Once you boot the machine single-user mode is accessable only from the console/secure web console/lan console. There is no other way to get to the machine.

If the system is trusted, and you have single-user mode secured, then you must know the root password to get into single-user mode.

Re: about sinle user mode

Think of your system that works in run levels. Each level is capable of starting and stopping different programs. The network starts at run level two. This means that you can only work from the console. The 'root' account is the only one that will really work at single-user level. It is NOT actually a login ....

Interupt at the 10 second prompt.

A question comes up about interacting with the IPL

Y

hpux -is

The root user is on, with minimal utilities and no filesystems other than root mounted.

Re: about sinle user mode

yes . Only root can login in single user mode because infact you can use m/c only through console in single user mode and even when you boot system in single user mode from ISL
hpux -is
t will directly give you root access without any authetication.

Re: about sinle user mode

Hi !
The you can go into single user mode , just issue shutdown -r 0 command , when system start to reboot then just interrupt the boot proccess and issue "bo" to boot the system , when it says you want to interact with IPL , say yes , it will come to ISL> prompt , say issue hpux -is to boot the system in single user mode , you will login into the system as root, system do not ask any password.

Re: about sinle user mode

Hi,

another way of going to a single user mode is by typing...

#shutdown

without any argument/s. This way no need to wait for the 10secs grace period to manually invoke single user mode.

Re: about sinle user mode

The "...init s and shutdown 0..." commands from multi user mode may be what the confusion is about. I think Linux and Solaris might still support these but not hp-ux. Since HP-UX version 10.20 and 10.30 these commands have become mostly obsolete. Once, issuing either init s / S or shutdown 0 from multi-user mode, run level 2 and above, would stop processes above rc0.d and transition downwards into single user mode, but no more.

As the others have pointed out you can only truly get into single user mode from the ISL prompt issuing hpux -is.
