Sounds to me like you have a problem with host name resolution and you're actually pinging another host that is still up. I can say for a fact that my servers are not pingable when they've been shut down.

Hi,

When you specify the shutdown command without the '-h' or '-r' option, the default is to put the system into single user mode. It sounds like your system left the network services running when it transitioned to single user mode.

We had a guy on our team do that to a system once during a D/R test, and other nodes in the cluster could still reach the box he had (accidentally) put into single user mode, which made things interesting for a bit until we figured it out.

Good catch, JP - I missed that one. I would have thought that the network services would get shutdown anyway, but that could be an explanation.

Re: After shut down I can ping the server why ?

I suppose there could be another workstation or box with the same ip address, but in that event there would be a lot of problems connecting to either host.

shutdown -hy 0

That is how I shut down my boxes. Or rather thats how I did it prior to loading them into a shipping container.

Re: After shut down I can ping the server why ?

JP is (of course) absolutely right. I just tried it on one of my workstations and, despite the fact that "/sbin/rc1.d/K660net stop" runs to "unconfigure LAN interfaces", the machine is still alive and well on the network.

Re: After shut down I can ping the server why ?

one thing not specified was how long after the shutdown was issued the ping command still worked.

A shutdown command does not shutdown the network services immediately and the ping will work for the period of time it takes to shutdown all other services before the networking services.

No the server is not shutdown - it is in single user mode. Go to the console, hit enter and you will be logged in as root. Run "shutdown -h -y 0" and the server will be truly shut down.

Re: After shut down I can ping the server why ?

This is one of those 'used to work' situations. In the old days, just a simple: shutdown 0 would quickly boot to single user mode where nothing is mounted and no network services are running, the same as a manual boot using hpux -is. However, that broke back in the 10.xx days (worked in 9.04) such that some filesystems (/var and/or /usr) are not unmounted and depending on patches and HP-UX version, portions of networking were left running.

SO the ONLY guarenteed way to boot into single user mode is to use shutdown -r and then interrupt the bootup process to issue the hpux -is command.

Re: After shut down I can ping the server why ?

Subrata,

You cannot shutdown your system with shutdown -y 0 command. This will bring system to single user mode.

You should use shutdown -hy 0 command. use this command to shutdown your server, then when shutdown is completed switch off the server and try to ping to ensure that there is no other system with the same IP

Cheers!!!

HOw much are sure that the server is in down state. Which is this server. DO u have a GSP or MP, login to gsp and check, in which state the server is..

Re: After shut down I can ping the server why ?

Hi,
I suspect, are you pinging GSP/MP interface.
This will ping when the power is ON!
It doesn't need OS to be up. If you can ping, try telnet telnet to the same IP!
If you get "MP Login>" you are at MP
