Anyone Using RealPlayer for HP-UX?

Anyone Using RealPlayer for HP-UX?

I'm curious if anyone (outside of HP) is using RealPlayer under HP-UX. I've been tinkering with it a bit and managed to find a couple of bugs (maybe a third, but I'm not sure who's at fault).

Anyone else using it?

I downloaded and played the ~12MB version of the "Lord of the Rings" movie trailer. It's rather impressive on a 2560x1024 SLS configuration running full-screen. ;-)

P.S. I know it's going to be asked so, here's the URL to download it:

http://proforma.real.com/real/player/unix/unix.html

If you have access to ITRC, there's some notes available in doc WEBKBAN00000623. RealPlayer doesn't work yet as a plug-in for Netscape, but it is being worked on.

Re: Anyone Using RealPlayer for HP-UX?

Which options did you select
when downloading RealPlayer
for HP-UX? The only HP-UX
choice was HP-UX 11, and
none of the CPU types made
sense. I want to choose
"PA RISC" from a list that
only includes:

Pentium Class System
604 Power PC
MIPS
Power PC
Alpha
G3 or higher (750 powerPC)
Sparc

I randomly picked one, but
the resulting download was not
a tar file of source code. It
was a binary. I'm
not about to run a random
binary for the wrong type of
CPU unless I've heard from
someone that they've done it
successfully without trashing
their system.

I've got a J5000 running
HP-UX 10.20. It will
eventually be upgraded to 11.0.

Where did you find the
document WEBKBAN00000623? I
assume ITRC refers to the IT
resource center. I've
logged into it, but no search
comes up with the document.

Thanks,

Re: Anyone Using RealPlayer for HP-UX?

I installed this after reading Chuck's post ..... I'm sure I used the sparc option.

It didn't trash my system ...... The doc id : WEBKBAN00000623 does refer to the RC .... fyi :

RealPlayer for HP-UX 11.x

DOCUMENT

The following are basic instructions for installing and using RealPlayer on HP-UX 11.x systems.
This information is being provided as a convience to our support customers. The HP Response
Center does not support RealPlayer.

Download

RealPlayer for HP-UX may be downloaded from
http://proforma.real.com/real/player/unix/unix.html When downloading RealPlayer, choose
"HP-UX 11" for the OS, and any CPU.

Notes

HP-UX 10.20 is not supported
The web-site does not list any Hewlett-Packard CPUs, but the correct bits will be
downloaded with any CPU selected

Install

Follow the directions given on Real's pages to execute the install program:

Once the bits have been successfully downloaded, RealPlayer will be ready for installation. The
following steps should be performed to set the permissions on the installer and execute it:

Example:
chmod u+x rp8_hpux_11_cs1.bin
./rp8_hpux_11_cs1.bin

It is preferable to install as root because some spurious error messages will be avoided later.
When installing as root, ensure that $HOME is not set to a user's home directory.

If necessary, configure RealPlayer for your network configuration using the Proxy and Transport
menu under [view]-[preferences].

If RealPlayer was installed as root, the mime types need to be installed so that RealPlayer will be
invoked from Netscape. Do not use a root login for this step:

$ cd /usr/local/RealPlayer8
$ ./mimeinstall.sh

Exit Netscape and restart it before trying to use RealPlayer as a helper application. To test
RealPlayer, go to http://www.real.com and find an audio/video clip to play.

Miscellaneous

To redirect the audio to headphones:

$ export AUDIO=/dev/audioEA
$ realplay

To use the internal speakers:

$ export AUDIO=/dev/audioIA
$ realplay

Known Problems

RealPlayer works only as a helper application not as a Netscape plug-in. Plans to resolve
this are already in place. Some sites, such as http://www.CNN.com, require RealPlayer
to work as a plugin and thus, the HP-UX version will not play the selected file.
When real player is iconized, the icon is blank.
Real formats are supported but non-Real formats such as AVI and MPG do not work.
Colormap errors may be reported.
If Real Player is not installed as root, the installation will try to install the Real plugin into
the user's ~/.netscape directory. Netscape will issue the error: "No such file or
directory. Can't load plugin $HOME/.netscape/plugin/rpnp.so." This
error can be ignored.
