Assigning Points to Replies????????

Hi,
Just to request all the posting users that assigning points to replies is a good thing and it will advantageous in following way.

1. It gives importance about the answers that which answer was helpful in solving the problem.
2. It encourages all the responders.
3. It boosts the confidence in a person when he gets points and try to achive more (in this case try to contribute more and more in better fashion.)

Inspite of all lots of points discussed regarding the same, still there is lack of ability to assign points to expert participants....

Please assign points depending upon the helpfulness of the answer in rersolving problems.
Thanks,
-pap

Re: Assigning Points to Replies????????

PLEASE !!!!

not another thread about points and hats !!!!!!

The primary purpose of this wonderful forum cannot be a discussion about assigning points
and getting hats.

We had enough threads about this themes and we should concentrate again on the technical infos we can share in this forum.

Re: Assigning Points to Replies????????

Hi pap

Not all replies warrant points which is probably why you have assigned points to some of your replies.

There is a N/A option for replies that dont warrant points if you take the effort to do this then you wont get sarcastic replies to your posting.

cheers
John.

Re: Assigning Points to Replies????????

Another reason Pap may not be giving out points is because those who answered his/her? questions may not have given him any.. although two wrongs don't make a right!

It was more an issue when points meant prizes, but honestly, who really cares now about points, the forums is more a community/gathering place rather than some style of competition.

Forget about it already....

Re: Assigning Points to Replies????????

Enough, already.

In a world where you cannot get people to put away their cell phones during a movie, no amount of prodding, coaxing, pleading, or God help me, whining, is going to make everybody assign points, whether 10, 2, or N/A.

When I ask a question, it is because:
a) I have no idea
b) I want some moral/tech support before I do something irretrivable to a server.

I assign points, certainly. Information may want to be free, but it very rarely comes that way. If a person takes the time and effort to respond, I assign points. Hey, for a good answer, I wish I could pick up the tab for a few cold ones and a burger.

Others do not. Whether from selfishness, confusion, lack of knowledge, etc., some do not and in all likelihood will not assign points.

It's the nature of the beast. Let it go.

It is not about the quest for points / hats.
It is not about competition.
It is not about flooding the forums with responses in some futile quest for validation.

It is about common courtesy and respect, and hopefully about a shared enjoyment of knowledge as well.

Re: Assigning Points to Replies????????

Jon: WELL SAID.

OTOH, I guess some of these threads about points find a source in a feeling of unfairness, which I can understand.

If a newbee is trying very hard to get a new hat (and be fair, why should he not try, all hat know it is nice to promote), and he gets no points to a good and helpful answer where an oldy gets points for the same answer posted three hours later, just because that oldy wants points, I *do* understand the anger that the newbee might feel. [ fill in any name/status for newbee and/or oldy ]

next to respect and all the other good virtues you mention, fairness, eagerness, and human feelings should be taken into consideration.

The longer you are on this forum, the better you can live with lost points
Enjoy, Have FUN! H.Merijn

Re: Assigning Points to Replies????????

Hi All,
I do appreciate for participating in my Question.
Thanks for all who pointed out my questions where I didn't give points. Actually I was not aware of N/A option.

I have searched my all the questions and assigned to all of them which i could find it. Let me know if you can find any question asked by me and I have not assigned any points. Thanks in advance.

One more thing in assgning points is that when the problem has been actually solved, after few days somebody has replied and you all know better that once the questions solved and you assign points no body again care to look at that question. Any way it was nice to assign points to all participants.....:))))....

I do not look at the person while assigning the points, only look at the answer given by him using his/her self expertise.

Thanks,
-pap

Re: Assigning Points to Replies????????

All,
At the risk of beating a dead horse, I have to comment that a lot of points did get assigned as a result of this thread. I even found one of my own that I'd missed.

And I must agree with Jon that "It is not about flooding the forums with responses in some futile quest for validation". More people should learn to keep quiet if they have nothing worth contributing. There's a few hats out there that seem to have earned them with 2 point answers.

Re: Assigning Points to Replies????????

Pete,

I disagree, it has nothing to this hats or points and how you got them. It??? s about participation. If someone less than knowledgeable than you wants to take a shot at answering someone???s question, so be it. At least they tried.
And that???s what it is all about trying to help each other out.

Re: Assigning Points to Replies????????

I Do agree with yates.

IN SHORT JUST ASSIGN POINTS TO PARTICIPANTS NO MATTER WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF IT. THE FACT IS THAT IT CERTAINLY HELPS IN A DIRECT OR INDIRECT WAY.....:)>>>>>

Re: Assigning Points to Replies????????

Pshew!!!

Just went back and assigned points to all replies to my questions that I had missed. Didn't realize I'd been so BAD.

Just one thought. If all of us are making a commitment to assign points to EVERY reply from now on, doesn't that leave us at the mercy of some malicious prankster who has too much time on his/her hands.

For example, if I wanted to, I could post 1000 replies to Pap's question and if he does what he says he's going to do, he'd have to assign points to each of those just to keep his statistics at 100%.

Just a thought.

Re: Assigning Points to Replies????????

Charles,

If that were the case I think the forums would have much bigger issues than pap's 100% point record.

Im sure HP would put a stop to any such pranksters.

Re: Assigning Points to Replies????????

Yates is correct.
HP reserves (and sometimes uses) the right to pull any post or reply.
They have clear-cut rules for this & I'm sure "shotgunning replies" is covered.
The only caveat is once points are rewarded they remain - whether the reply gets pulled or not.
MORAL -> Assign points properly & carefully.

Jeff

YES
HP reserve that right to pull off any thread.
I remember once I got mad on one person. I do not want to say his name. He wasn't assigning points to anyone and was giving crazy remark to one who has remind him about it. He stil does that and I never open his thread.
Me and couple other guys was just blast on that guy. I didn't find that thread after few hour.

pap you are good you have accept it and assign points to old thread.
