Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

I have a further question but it's about attaching our new Dat72 tape drive. At the back of the server there is a terminator (??) attached (covering) a slot which is labeled:

SLOT1 > LAN/SCSI CORE IO

Question is, can I remove this terminator and use it to directly connect the tape? The drive came with a VHD connection but we don't have one of those cards.

The SLOT 1 has a slot for a network connection but we are using the other LAN connection on the machine.

What do you think?

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

Adrian,
I am only aware of D2XX, I know they are externally identical (size etc)
But for the rest...
Since I dont know how your other disks are connected it will be difficult for me to say but I believe that looking at it (I cant, my office is not where the boxes are installed... (4 Km from here))
I am sure you have a cd drive in the box, so look where it is connected, if it end to the board you mention you can use it because you should have a slot for removable devices, that would be the first one you see from the top
then FW-SCSI2 slots for your disks

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

I remember now,
You should find some information on harware path on the inside of the door
What does it say?

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

The machine has a DVD drive which is internal. I know it has 2 LAN cards. We are already using one of those. The SLOT 1 I'm talking about has the label LAN/SCI (Core IO). I'm assuming this is a free SCI or LAN slot depending on our needs. It has a terminator attached to it. So if I remove this terminator, I should be able to attach the tape drive right?

Post your ioscan -u output.

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

The one Im thinking of is
back side under your serial 2/UPS connector
on the left side
Is that the one, if so YES!

From inside of the door:

DRIVE A0 -> 0/0/2/0.0
DRIVE A1 -> 0/0/2/0.2
DRIVE B0 -> 0/0/1/1.0
DRIVE B1 -> 0/0/1/1.2
MEDIA -> 0/0/2/1.X

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

You would have to connect the bus 0/0/2/1

Did you at the rear of the box? ARe you talking of the slots in the upper left? (Add-ons)

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

Figure out about to connect to same place where the media is connected.
At the rear end, where you say terminator is there any path and type of connector written. You have to figure that out to see if it's free..

Thanks

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

Hi,

This is the reading from top to bottom of the CORE I/O on the server.

SLOT 12 -> 0/10/0
SLOT 11 -> 0/12/0
SLOT 10 -> 0/8/0
SLOT 9 -> 0/9/0
SLOT 8 -> 0/3/0
SLOT 7 to 4 are unavailable
SLOT 3 (PCI) -> 0/4/2
SLOT 2 (CONSOLE TOC GSP RESET)
SLOT 1 (LAN/SCSI)

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

Adrian
As I already said previously, where your DVD is connected you should be able to connect your tape, the others I dont know...Im quite sure it would lead you to the slot I mentionned:
Under the serial2/UPS connector
above the PS2 mouse connector
Its on the left, next to it on the right is a parallel connector

Good luck
P.S do you have the key of the box?

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

Nope I dont see this would be of any use to you. Connect where the DVD is connected..Thats the best place to utilize in my view.
What is your server model?

Thanks

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

Victor,

In SLOT2 (CONSOLE TOC GSP RESET)

There is a HD (not VHD) SCSI connection. It has three other connections hanging off it:

one marked console
one maked power
one maked ups

The one marked console has the connection that connects the console. The keyboard is actually attached behind the console itself if my memory serves me correctly.

Machine Info:

Serial Number: USE44105M7
Base Product (Current): A6797B
Processor Product (Current): A6805B
Model: rp5430 750Mhz
OS: HP-UX 11.11
RAM: 2GB
Disks: 36GB x 4

Any more suggestions? I just want to know if I can remove what looks like a terminator from SLOT 1 (LAN/SCSI) and connect the tape drive directly there.

How do I go about knowing if to do that?

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

Sorry
We were not talking of the same box, I thought you were talking of the box you just managed to create a tape...

This is nothing like your D350

Well let me think again then, back soon

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

I believe you can use it..
If my memory serves me,you should see on the rear some LAN/SCSI LED with LED states Not sure but I think you should have 2 LEDs for your SCSI the upper if green means you are in LVD mode /IF off you are in Single ended
the lower is for Termpower Present/Absent

I will see if I can find some documentation before you go ahead unless someone else says its safe...

All the best

Solution

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

Im a bit puzzled as you know I have no box on this site, but I can remember Not the slot number but where they are:
You should have 2 cards with Lan RG45 on both
Upper with 2 LEDS on left RG45 LAN/GSP and right-D type 25-Pin female:
This is the console/UPS/Remote connector

Lower card:
LAN 10/100Base-T Primary LAN RG45 (0/0/0/0.) 2 LEDs then a Ultra-2 SCSI Connector (68-Pin VHDCI SCSI). and again 2 LEDS on the right.
The one you should look at are the one on the right

The other on the left are for the LAN (Amber:10BT mode)

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

Yeah you are right two upper and lower lights. So can I take off this terminator and connect the Dat72 drive directly?

Adrian I wonder if the fact nothing is plugged in it yes make it showing itself as a LVD (which isnt good for you...) this bothers me but lets compare:

On 0/0/1/0 you see it as SCSI C896 Fast Wide Single-Ended... the same card!
Difference I plugged a scsi array box for the external DVD (it was cheaper this way: tape inside external DVD...)

So it seems possible

Good luck

Re: Attaching Dat72 Tape Drive

Victor,

So just take off the terminator from SLOT 2 and connect the Dat72 external tape drive directly?
