automount daemon

I have a C160 running 10.20 which mounts other NFS files systems using auto_master and auto.direct. Recently, none of the mounts listed in auto.direct will mount, the 'cd /mountpoint' command just hangs. I've also noticed that the nfs.client startup fails at boot time, but leaves 2 automountd daemons running. I was under the impression that inetd spawned only one automountd. I've tried nfs.client stop and nfs.client start to resolve the problem, but the automountd daemons just stay there. I've even gone as far as trying kill -9 to get rid of the daemons, but to no avail.

Anyone got any ideas

Re: automount daemon

Hi,

Just a hunch. Check
1) /etc/rc.config.d/nfsconf
2) output of ps -fae|grep rpc

Try to insert debugging statements in /sbin/rc2.d/S430nfs.client ie. (echo or print statements) to identify where exactly the startup script hung or failed.

Hope this helps. Regards.

Re: automount daemon

Mark,

Automount implementation on 10.20 is a buggy beast. Whenever i ran into such problems and didn't have the choice of rebooting the box,
i would run the automount daemon manually using another mount point (say /nfs ..).
If even that didn't work, reboot would be the only option. But, you mentioned that even during startup NFS client program breaks.
So, check the nfs.client script and see what is there corresponding to start. Anything odd?
I guess AUTOMOUNT is enabled in /etc/rc.config.d/nfsconf.

Once again, look at the nfs.client scripts
to see whether any automount entry was added, due to which automount is starting twice.

Also check the NFS-server side.
Maybe a not or mal functioning server makes your nfs-clients fail.
