Back Up Recovery

Hello,

We recently purchased an RX1600 so that we can use it as a test machine since most of us in our workplace are inexperienced with
HP-UX. We are trying to learn the recovery process. We made a full backup of the machine and a make recovery tape. We proceeded to initiate the loading of the recovery tape. It went for quite sometime and we bumped into wanting to load a file that it could not find: /sbin/fs/vxfs4.4/mkfs I believe at this point it is trying to make the file system. We could not get it to proceed successfully from this point on. I had no other recourse than to reboot, install and recover from the DVD. Any ideas on how we can recover from a tape without this error so that we can frecover and load the full backup??? Thank you.

Re: Back Up Recovery

Nelson,
Sorry, but I can only tell\offer how we run our disaster recovery. We test it monthly and our system works well.
We have and maintain an off-site server that is part of our domain. It has all the means neccessary to run the network and a duplicate tape unit to restore users, and program files only. Having the server software on the off-site unit makes it a lot easier than having to try and restore everything from scratch.
Not knowing your network and the scope of your systems, I can only say what works for us as a small business of 50+ systems.
We use a tape rotation process consisting of 12 sets of 2 tapes.
We bring in the off-site server once a month to update software (matched to current servers) and recovery files and databases.
I then test it on our network and use my pc to connect to it and run a live parallel test.
I hope someone can help you resolve what is not working with your current plan, as I can only offer an idea of what works well for us.

Re: Back Up Recovery

Nelson,

When you made the Ignite recovery tape, was there any errors/warnings? The error you are describing usually means that the make_tape_recovery process did not create a valid tape.

I have used the tape recovery process many times to restore systems at DR tests with no errors. I also use it to "clone" new systems based on a similar system.

If you have an older version of Ignite, you may want to install and use the latest version.

Re: Back Up Recovery

Yes, it was telling me that it could not find: /sbin/fs/vxfs4.4/mkfs to reload. At that point I had to boot and install from the DVD. Thanks.

Re: Back Up Recovery

I installed the most updated version of Ignite. Created a make tape recovery and attempted to boot from it and I got the same error. Is there any documentation that I can see this process step by step? Or can anyone provide any ideas??? Thanks.
