Backup Methods
I have all systems running with HPUX-10.20 & 11.00. I would like to do backup all, but I don't know what method is the best - save time to do archive & mininize time to bring up the system after scratch.
Would you let me know the advantage & disavantage of Ignite network archive compare with Ignite tape recovery method.
Can we using tar method to do bakup and install the entire system. How to do it; and the advantage & disadvantage.
Thank you
Regards
Jen

Re: Backup Methods
Ignite is the fastest restore method if your system crashes. You can boot from the tape/network en it completely recovers vg00. It does not matter if you do it by tape or over the network. If you have a tape drive per server (DDS) there is nothing wrong with the tape backup. If not a network backup is just as good. You can even boot in other networks if you install boot helpers.
I would not use tar for system backup but i prefere fbackup since it is faster and has less problems with large number of files and files > 2 GB.

Re: Backup Methods
Other than that, you can use fbackup. It is really great Hp utility for backup purposes.
Also I can tell you to use amanda for backup purposes. It is open source. I know it is little bit hard to configure.
Hope this helps

Re: Backup Methods
If you've got the disc space how about doing both?
I backup systems over the network and then copy to tape. This way I can restore a system from either. Most of the workstations I support don't have a tape drive, so network backup means I can restore a system without having to power things off and attach a tape drive. But I have the option to do so if necessary.
