Backup to Remote Tape Drive - Time?

Hello, I have a question that is vague but maybe there is someone who can help me.

I have to backup a server to a tape drive on another server. Does anyone have any idea how long it will take to backup 9GB to the remote tape drive. Both of the servers are on the same 100MB switch. The tape drive is a DDS3 If someone could give me an approximate it would really help. Thanks in advance and as always I will assign points.

Re: Backup to Remote Tape Drive - Time?

John,

The DDS3 is rated at 3.6 GB per hour. With the 100 MB switch in the middle, I think you'll be doing well if it takes 3 hours and it may well take longer than that.

John:

Pete gave you a good answer. Keep in mind that it will also depends on how busy your network is. Doing a backup across the network is much slower.

Hi John,

I had just a 7GB remote backup to a DDS2 in about 5 hours.

For comparison, Volkmar's DDS2 is rated at 1.32 GB per hour, so you should be 2.7 times faster, but you've got more to backup - I'll stick with the 4 hour guess.

Re: Backup to Remote Tape Drive - Time?

Another thing to consider, is system activity and network activity. If the system and/or network is busy, this will greatly reduce the bandwidth available for I/O. This can easily double your backup time on busy systems and networks.
