bad file number

I am running HPUX 11.11 on HP9000 K460. I noticed a number of messages "accept: bad file number" in the syslog. Are the messages just informational. My syslog.log is attached for review.
Thanks,
Richard

Re: bad file number

Hi Richard,

I'm allmost certain you have mismatch on your network ip-address <--> hostname or a duplicated ip-address.

TRy to isolate the problem from a microsoft client and the hpux server.

# nslookup ip-address
# nslookup hostname

same on both windows as hpux.

Re: bad file number

No, that's does'nt seem to be a problem. Everything check out. I did perform a "/sbin/init.d/net.init start" command this morning. I read this from another post about bad file numbers. The command didnt return any errors. netsat -in and ifconfig lan0 all look okay.
Thanks,
Richard

Re: bad file number

How about running landiag. You can clear the statistics first, wait a while then check again later to see if you are getting errors?

Re: bad file number

Hi,
it looks a bit like the situation described in Document id: 8606247332

European Link:
http://www5.itrc.hp.com/service/cki/docDisplay.do?docLocale=en_US&docId=200000074022977

If so, it should not be all that serious.

Re: bad file number

Hi again Richard,
I cannot post the document, as it is HP property and a support contract is needed to access it. If you have a support contract linked to your profile, try "maintenance and support for hp products" --> "technical knowledge base" and there change the selection from "keyword" to "doc id", enter the doc id and hit "search".
If not, I can proabably reveal without prosecution that the document says something about inetd returning an incorrect error message.... hint, hint: implying that the error may not be all that serious.
But I would feel guilty if I - based on thin evidence - gave you the impression that the messages could be safely ignored. Therefore I suggest you ask someone else's opinion too.

John K.
