Booting Clients from Ignite UX Server

I have configured Itanium Based RX2600 Server as Ignite UX server and I want my new RX2600 Server machine to directly boot from Ignite server and further i must be able to install OS on it. I have raw Client Machine i.e. nothing installed on it.
COuld anybody tell me regarding booting directly through net and connecting to Ignite server for installation.
I am able to install on client those already have OS installed on it and Ignite UX server is able to access that server.
Thanks Bharat

Re: Booting Clients from Ignite UX Server

Yeah .. i tried it but it keeps on searching for DHCP and nothing happens .. something wrong with the DHCP configuration .. i have configured my inetd.conf as follows:tftp
*dgram udp wait root /usr/lbin/tftpd tftpd /opt/ignite /var/opt/ignite
*bootps dgram udp wait root /usr/lbin/bootpd bootpd
Also i have nothing in inetd.sec

Re: Booting Clients from Ignite UX Server

Up to version 4 Ignite, I'm sure you can only boot a client off the built in lan card.

I've not checked the documentation on version 5 so I can't say this definitively.

But you might try the boot off the built in LAN card.

To monitor the situation on the server during the boot:

tail -f /var/adm/syslog/syslog.log

in another window:

ps -ef | grep boot

you will see a process open when you try and boot.

There is a process for swcopy to copy the OS onto the Ignite Server. Did you follow this cookbook?

Re: Booting Clients from Ignite UX Server

I am trying thr' inbuilt card itself.. i tried seeing syslog.log file it is giving error about bootptab/dhcptab telling address already in use. I tried giving another IP also but it didn't worked.
Could U tell me what exactly i need to do with bootptab and dhcptab
And how i check whether my DHCP coniguration is OK

Re: Booting Clients from Ignite UX Server

Raj Ignite is running on RX2600 Itanium Based Server and am able to install clients with existing OS.
But i need to install a fresh client (Again a Itanium Based Server RX2600) which will boot thr' inbuilt lan card and i would be able to continue further with installation.
Thanks

Re: Booting Clients from Ignite UX Server

Bharat,

did you already have a look at the Ignite Admin Guide? For 'newer' Ignite versions you should have a look at the 'Ignite-UX B.4.3.x PA-RISC/Itanium-based Server Setup' section:

http://docs.hp.com/cgi-bin/onlinedocs.py?mpn=B2355-90834&service=hpux&path=00/00/20&title=Ignite-UX%20Administration%20Guide,%20Edition%2015

Best regards...

Re: Booting Clients from Ignite UX Server

Yeah i went thr' that file, edited inetd.conf acordingly and restarted daemon .. i edited bootptab to add exact entries as per my parameters .. also created lan boot option on cleint ..
Still it keep on searching for DHCP and i end up seeing dots on the console of cleint.

I agree there is definitely something wrong with the configuration.

Re: Booting Clients from Ignite UX Server

Hmm, I'm confused now... essentially the >= 4.3 instructions talk about configuring instl_bootd instead of bootpd. Did you try that?

Re: Booting Clients from Ignite UX Server

Hi all,
FYI
When i try to boot new server with OS DVD (B.11.23) and then tried using Ignite server giving following details:
1. Ip Add of Ognite server
2. Subnet mask
3. IP for Host
4. Gateway IP
5. DNS ip
Installation went on smooth and it was able to find the server. But i am not getting it thr' lan boot option. I don't want to use OS CD at all.
Thanks

Re: Booting Clients from Ignite UX Server

Hi All,
Thanks for your time and support. I was able to solve my problem by correcting certain configuration issues. I configured instl_bootd, /etc/bootptab ( did not use dhcptab), used fixed addresses and MAC's of Ignite Clients and was able to boot thr' network.
I am using :

B5725AA B.5.0.35 HP-UX (Ignite-UX)
Ignite-IA-11-23 B.5.0.35

Regards,
Bharat
