Can I Extend the root-File System on HP-UX 10.20 ?

Hi,

I want to update an HP-UX 10.20 to 11.0 or 11i, but I don't have enough place on my root (/) directory. How can I extend it ? (SAM say, i have to umount it, but it's not possible !)
Thanks you for your help.

Re: Can I Extend the root-File System on HP-UX 10.20 ?

Not without rebuilding the system.

Here is how.

make_tape_recovery backup tape.

boot off tape.

as in at console interupt at the 10 second prompt

sea

bo p# #pick the # from the sequential devic.

N Do not interact.

Watch carefully. There will be a keyboard prompt to get to the Ignite Install interface.

Assuming there is space on the system, this will work.

The problem you face is that the root volume must be contiguous. Thats why you just can't extend it on the fly.

You should not have any real files in root. If you do, you should relocate them, this may relieve the space problem.

Hello Thierry,

You will have to create a bootable tape, (ignite) and restore your installation to a larger / filesystem.

Re: Can I Extend the root-File System on HP-UX 10.20 ?

Hello Thierry,
You did not say what your system is...nor did you give us the actual size of your / file system
under 10.20 and 11 (but maybe 32 Bit...)
/
/stand
swap
Are and have to be contiguous and hold in 2GB
So depending the size of your swap and /stand you may already be at the max...

This limitation does not exist anymore with 11i

For the rest the previous posts answers you question but remember the 3 FS have be contiguous with a total not exeeding 2GB

Re: Can I Extend the root-File System on HP-UX 10.20 ?

The wording of your question suggests you are thinking of using update-ux. Don't do it!

A year ago this month I was new to the forums and ended up in a hell of a mess using update-ux - if you need convincing, I'll dig out the thread URL. I remain grateful to the people who helped me out of that mess and want to do my bit to help other people not to get in a mess in the first place!

Backup your system and do a cold install.

Re: Can I Extend the root-File System on HP-UX 10.20 ?

Hi Thierry,

I agree with Mark. 11.0 to 11i is ok. 10.20 to 11.0 is a headache though I could do it before. I can't imagine 10.20 to 11i. I suggest you go for fresh install and import the Volume groups. Remove the 10.20 boot disks and label them. Put new disks and install 11i and other required softwares and import the VGs.

Hi Thierry,
A E25 is a very small box... How much RAM do you have and what size internal disk?
(vgdisplay vg00)
Like Mark I woulnd advise you to go for an update, do a cold install or use a ignite tape of HPUX11, where are you located?

Re: Can I Extend the root-File System on HP-UX 10.20 ?

Based on what I've seen, if your hardware can run 11i, I'd recommend a cold install.

The hardware is essentially obsolete, and in a perfect world, I'd say replace it. You can get good 1U HP-UX PA-RISC servers for a very good price.

cold install
mirgrate applications one at a time to new machine.
