Re: Can't boot to HP10.20
Just my $.02
You can not use the hpux command at the PDC you'll have to go first to the ISL prompt. Try this:
bo alt ipl
Interact with ISL (Y or N)?>Y
when you get the prompt ISL> then type
hpux -is (to boot to single user)
or
hpux -is /stand/vmunix.old
to load the old kernel
hpux (without any parameters load the original kernel from the primary path)
Also, reset will restart the hp-ux box.
Please let me know how it goes.
Thanks and good luck.

Re: Can't boot to HP10.20
If you can boot to the ISL> prompt, do not use hpux -ll instead try,
hpux ll / (little L's, no minus)
or hpux ll /stand
Those should list the files in your / or /stand directory repectively.
(hpux -ll is trying to tell the hpux utility to do something different -ll is actually not a legitimate command, using it probably comes back with try -lm instead, which means boot to LVM maintenance mode)
Using just ll says list files.
Good luck,
Kel

Re: Can't boot to HP10.20
Try what Kelli indicated at the ISL prompt:
ISL>hpux ll /stand/*
look for vmunix.* and boot from that kernel. If not, I would reinstall the OS again. Or you may create an image (Recovery Tape)from any other
machine loaded hp-ux OS that supports your hardware requirements and then go to your Server and boot off that tape, then follow the installation instructions.
Hope this help.
Thanks and good luck.

Re: Can't boot to HP10.20
always, keep a backup for all data. I would get a new HD and install the OS, boot the server from the new HD, then you can take it from there.
Note:
The recovery tape will not backup the data, it'll create an image of the OS and the current configuration of the VG.
Hope this help

Re: Can't boot to HP10.20
If you just can't boot the system, i.e: no kernel then you can't (to my knowledge) preserve the data on that system, but...
If you have another similar system with HP-UX 10.2 (do not use hp-ux 11), you can remove the drive from the ailing system, change it's scsi address to be different from the new system.
Add it to that system, boot the system on it's drive, and fsck (fscking a 10.2 from an 11.0 or 11i system can corrupt it) and mount the ailing drive to /tmp_mnt for example.
You could then try using sam, tar, cpio, etc. to backup the data and then recover it once you rebuild.
Still, I would spend a bit more time making absolutely sure your drive is "toast".
Good luck,
Kel

Re: Can't boot to HP10.20
There is an ITRC document id : OZBEKBRC00000581 which will explain how to boot from Support CD and mount your root file system so you can troubleshoot the system.
Also, you mentioned that this machine was previous attached to a network. Did it boot from the network or did it boot from the SCSI disk ? If it booted across the network then the only two ways to get it to boot now would be: 1) to boot it off the network like you used to or 2) use the support CD above.
Best regards,
Kent M. Ostby
