Can't log in

Boy, talk about dumb. On my new rx6600 Itanium, which I am getting ready, I set up password sync from Windows to UNIX which we are successfully running on our other three 9000 boxes. Unfortunately, I cannot log back in. I get a login prompt, and it accepts a name, but gives back a login prompt. This is happening with telnet, rlogin and ssh.

Short of going to the box and forcing a boot into single user mode (if possible), is there any other way to gain access?

No, single-user is the only way unless you intentionally created a backdoor. You have now learned a valuable lesson. Don't never ever mess with nothing password related unless you are logged in as root in at least two sessions. That way you can get yourself out of trouble almost as fast as you got yourself in.

You appear to have clobbered your authentication system.

I agree the single user mode is the only chance you have.

It would be helpful in telling you what to do to fix this if you laid out the process you used to do this.

It seems to me difficult to believe this worked on HP-9000 boxes.

Do you run Opeview Operations Client or any commercial backup/restore software on the system ?

If going to single user mode is next to impossible for you, then you could use these softwares to perform remote operations and manipulate the configuration files.

But again, this is little too much if getting a downtime isn't that difficult.
