Can't See New Tape Drive
We did verify the DLT drive had the jumpers set for HP-UX, and also that scsi address 3 was OK.
Thanks

Re: Can't See New Tape Drive
If UNCLAIMED you probably need a driver built into kernel.
Is the tape drive powered up?

Re: Can't See New Tape Drive
To check it:
Fire up sam
goto kernel configuration
goto drivers
scroll down until you see stape
make sure both status indicators show "IN" on the rightmost two columns. if not, highlight it, go to Actions menu and select add driver. Of course you will need to reboot but such is life :)
Also if this tape is equipped with a multiple cartridge exchanger unit, you will also need the schgr driver to be IN.
Hope this helps

Re: Can't See New Tape Drive
Clay,
You lost me a bit at the end, but according to what we got, it is a (HVD/FWD) SCSI device.

Re: Can't See New Tape Drive
1)Each device on the bus must have a unique ID.
2) If using HVD/FWD SCSI thou shalt have no other device types (SE/LVD) on the same bus -- and yes, there is such as animal as an HVD terminator.
3) Thou shalt have EXACTLY 2 terminators and they are to be located on the physical ends of the bus. Typically, the termination on one end of the bus is located on the controller but in this case the termination must be enabled either by software configuarion, jumpers, or physically installing termination devices (resistor packs) in the controller itself. The termination on the other end of the bus is typically plugged on the last device in the chain but might be enabled by jumpers on the last device.
4) At least one device must supply the power for the termination. This is typically enabled by DIP switches or jumpers.
5) Thou must not exceed maximum bus length (for HVD 25m).
6) Thou must have no "Tee's" in the bus. The bus must be one continuous string from one end to the other. As Yogi Berra might say, when you come to a fork in the road, find another road because a SCSI bus must not branch. (To confuse you "Vee" connectors are legal.)

Re: Can't See New Tape Drive
Please make sure the differential SCI is supported by the Tape drive
thanks

Re: Can't See New Tape Drive
your ioscan shows that there is a scsi control (sctl) out there, two of them.
what devices do you have on your system for the DLT tape unit ?
# lsdev
does it show the stape ? is this the proper kernel module for your device tape ?
# how about listing /dev/rmt/* does any file show up ? if not, try: insf -ev
did this command insf create any new devices for you ?
you can always reboot to ISL prompt, and verify your SCSI devices under 'services', I believe.
dumb question: what exact model number is this DLT tape unit ?
when you place a cartridge tape in it, does a 'ready' light go on ? If not, RESET the unit by powering it off, then on.. until you see a READY light when the tape is in.

Re: Can't See New Tape Drive
For unix servers you need to set the dip switch setting in the tape drive as
1 - on
2 - on
3 - off you can see this switches below
4 - on the tape drive
5 - on
6 - on
7 - on
8 - on
for SCSI bus both the ends should be terminate. Normally the HBA forms the one end of terminator and the other end need to be terminated by a proper terminator.
For optimum results the tape drive should be connected to an individual scsi bus...and properly terminated.
Regards and all the best

Re: Can't See New Tape Drive
Thanks for the 101... I'm OK with 2, 5 and 6 and I will check on the remaining.
Tom,
I did the lsdev and it showed stape. However, when I tried a listing from /dev/rmt, I found I don't have an rmt. I then did the insf -ev and still no rmt.
Do I manually need to create /dev/rmt/* like you create a mount point for a cdrom?
As you all can tell, we have never done this, but are eager to learn.
Thanks

Re: Can't See New Tape Drive
I hope the adapter you're trying to plug the tape to is an HVD/FWD SCSI card.
If you're trying to plug this to the CORE I/O card of the rp5400 it won't work as it is LVD/SE card...
Just to clarify that point...
Xavier.

Re: Can't See New Tape Drive
Are you using a FWD cable? Has 63 pins?
Check the cable. Real easy to smash a pin and this could result in the device not being recognized by the system.
Even a pin that appears "a little out of alignment" can be trouble.

Re: Can't See New Tape Drive
We have N4000 with HPUX 11.11. DAT40 tape drive and CDROM drive in external enclosure in the rack.
From the tape drive a SE cable is run to the CORE I/O SE port on the N4000 server. This correcponds to HW address 0/0/1/0 on the server.
From the tape drive we have another cable to the CDROM to daisy chain.

Re: Can't See New Tape Drive
tape drive is working. I reversed the SCSI cable and the terminator on the tape drive, and plugged it into the SCSI port in the native card on the very bottom, issued insf -e, and there it was. No reboot, no SAM set up. I kind of went by what the set up was for the DDS on janus.
