Can you "shrink" a Logical Volume?

I just extended the FS by ~6GB on a logical volume that contained my /oradata files and now my Oracle DB won't startup. I want to un-extend the file system back to the original ~24GB size before this problem, is there a way to do that? Please, your help is greatly appreciated.

Aloha Folks,

It seems I was a little hasty. Strangely enough, the file permissions changed on a folder called pfile and resetting them fixed my Oracle startup problem. Strange, I didn't think that running an LVM extend command would change file permissions? Anybody out there run into something like this before? Thanks in advance.

lvextend does not change file permission. In a matter of fact, it even does not care if you have a filesystem there. it must be something else that changed the permissions.

about reducing the size of the lvol, it's *highly* not recommended to do so, because you will corrupt your data. The solution is to create a smaller FS.

Re: Can you "shrink" a Logical Volume?

1.I have never seen lvextend change permissions.

2.The danger with resizing logical volumes smaller is that you potentially can loose data.

Enough Lecture.

I always like free space My 6 DBAs abhor free space. As I allocate space from symmetrix or CDX it evaporates like it was never there.

Aloha Guys,

I appreciate the quick responses everyone, your words of HP wisdom have reinforced my own thoughts on the matter. I didn't think that the LVM Extend should have altered file permissions in any way whatsoever, but hearing it from you guys makes me doubly-sure. I will have to chalk this up to the gremlin that lives in our HP machine... =) Thanks guys, you are a very valuable resource for the HP community!

He

I guess you did not forget the extendfs

Re: Can you "shrink" a Logical Volume?

No, the extend seem to work flawlessly, only a single folder had it's file permissions changed, but this was a critical one for Oracle to startup. Personally, I think one of my operators may have inadvertently changed it by accident, but that's only my theory. Thanks for the contrib, I will award you some merit points for trying.
