cannot write to console..

I have several 9000/800/A500-7X box running 11.0.
I cannot write to console on some of the boxes and they are all configured exectly the same.

permissions is as follows:

crw--w--w- 1 root sys 0 0x000000 mmm dd hh:mm console

any ideas ??
