Re: CDE login on trusted system fails for long passwords

Hi,

Trusted only supports 8 char PWs & when converted only converted the first 8 chars.
Have the users try *only* the first 8 chars of their PW. If that works, have them set new PWs only 8 chars long.

HTH,
Jeff

Try just typing in the first 8 characters of the password.

And/OR reset the user password and reduce it to 8 characters.

Re: CDE login on trusted system fails for long passwords

Wow, that was fast. Thanks for the quick replies. We have instructed the users limit the password length to 12 characters. The problem is that the system is set up at a customer site. Once we deliver it to them they can do whatever they want. We never saw the problem here because we always use passwords 8 characters or less. I was hoping to find some way to prevent the typical user from getting himself into this jam. I tried going into SAM Auditing and Security and setting the password length limit to 8 but was still able to enter a longer password via /bin/passwd. I can't prevent them from doing stupid things but I can suggest it. Thanks again.

Re: CDE login on trusted system fails for long passwords

Hi,

A trusted system does allow passwords greater than 8 chars, however you should use only the first 8 chars of a password if it has not been changed since the system was trusted.

I've just tested CDE on an 11.00 box, and logged in with the password "thisisatest1" with no problems.

Also, the max password length in SAM that you mentioned ONLY applies to system generated passwords.

regards,

Darren.
