CDE/X across vpn

I want to run Exceed cde across a vpn, but currently I am unable to. Are there any netowrk ports that I need to make sure that are open for the process to work.

Second question, what is the best Xwindows client out there to use. (No cost is also a bonus)

port 6000 is the port that the X11 server listens on for each display and port 7000 is the port that the X11 font server listens on. I have used Exceed and ReflectionX and they are very similar.
