I was wondering if any could any a question about licencing of CFS. I plan on using SGeRAC 11.17 and possibly using CFS. I know in earlier version of OPS you had to buy additional licences for CVM for more than two nodes were used. Is there any additional cost associated with using CFS in the form of licencing etc.
Thanks
Michael

SolutionYes there is because Servericeguard Storage Management Suite for Oracle RAC is licensed per core, not per cluster (in fact most HPUX software is licensed this way now although there are exceptions).
So if for example you initially bought 2 rx6600s, each with 4 dual-core Montecito CPUs, then you might buy the HP-UX Mission Crticial Operating Environment with HP Serviceguard Cluster Filesystem for Oracle RAC (which includes the whole OS, plus the CFS, Serviceguard and SGeRAC components you need for RAC on CFS) the you would buy:
16 x T2797BA#002
ANd if you wanted to add a third node of the same spec later, you'd need to order it with
8 x T2797BA#002
If you already have HPUX and Serviceguard, there are other part numbers you need which don't include the OS.

Re: CFS licencing
Thanks for your reply very helpful, am I right in thinking that I would purchase the CFS product which would contain SGeRAC, rather than SGeRAC. I guess the main issue is that if the project desides to use CFS it's going to cost more than using SLVM's for the RAC database.
Cheers

Re: CFS licencing
Yes the CFS product with the part no above *does* include SGeRAC, but be careful, there are some other product numbers which include CFS but *do not* include SGeRAC (yes I know its confusing, the product numbers are to accomodate when customer already own various license components)
The T2777BA product number Stephen mentions contains Serviceguard, SGeRAC and CFS/CVM, but does not include the OS licenses. If you're ordering new kit for this, then generally its easier to stick with the product number I gave previously (T2797BA#002) as it includes all the software you need to run RAC on CFS with HP-UX all in one product number.

Re: CFS licencing
So if the project purchases SGeRAC 11.17 then they will really need to buy Storage. Management Suite, which will contain SGeRAC and CFS. So even if they decide to go down the SLVM path, then they will have to still purchase Storage. Management Suite which includes CFS anyway. Things were simplier with 11.16

Re: CFS licencing
Buy the Mission Critical HP-UX Operating Environment (which includes Serviceguard) and then just add Serviceguard Extension for RAC (another per-core license with product number T1907BA#2AH)
-or-
If you don't go for the Mission Critical Operating Environment You buy Serviceguard (T1905BA#2AH per core license) and then add SGeRAC (T1907BA#2AH)
All these product numbers assume you're on 11iv2.

Re: CFS licencing
Sent my previous message at the same time as you sent your last reply. Basically when the project makes it's decision on what storage platform they are going to use for the RAc db's they need to understand that CFS will cost more.
