Change in hardware path of the clusterlock disk

Hi,

What happens if the hardware path of the Cluster lock disk changes?. I tried changing the hardware path of the cluster lock disk in our test cluster setup and reconfigured the cluster lock VG to point to the new path (using vgexport and vgimport). I would like to know if there is anyway to update the cluster configuration without bringing it down/modifying cluster.ascii and cmapply. Can I use cminitlock command to achieve this? Pl. help.

Thanks,
Karthik S S

Re: Change in hardware path of the clusterlock disk

We had to do this action also 2 months ago and i remember there was no other way to do it then bring the cluster down to apply this change.

Re: Change in hardware path of the clusterlock disk

Hi,
Any changes related with Cluster Lock Disk/VG requires halting of cluster. No option at all.

Re: Change in hardware path of the clusterlock disk

Hi Karthik,

Nothing will happen to the existing cluster now except that both nodes will crash during the cluster reformation under unwanted circumstances as no node can grab the lock disk.

The other answer is no. cminitlock is only to restore the cluster lock structures on the existing lock disk. You cannot use it to change the lock disk.

Moreover, it is unsupported and HP will not be responsible for any problems resulting out of use/misuse of this tool.

You will have to halt the cluster and reapply the configuration to get your lock disk changed.

Re: Change in hardware path of the clusterlock disk

Hi (Again),

YOu might have seen a message in your syslog something as "cluster lock missing" or "unable to initialize the cluster lock" etc., This is to confirm that serviceguard has detected lock disk failure.

Re: Change in hardware path of the clusterlock disk

But in one of the forum threads stephen says that it is possible,

(last response in the above thread)

Pl. clarify.

Re: Change in hardware path of the clusterlock disk

Karthik,

The thread clearly said

// have used it successfully in restoring a clusterlock structure while the cluster is running//

Not for changing the lock disk. Changing the lock disk means changing the cmclconfig binary file. cminitlock only works on the disk not on the serviceguard binary file.

Re: Change in hardware path of the clusterlock disk

You CANNOT change the cluster lock device with the cluster up and running.
This type of change can ONLY be done with the cluster halted.
The cminitlock tool is ONLY for repairing a missing EXISTING cluster lock disc

This might work for you, but I've never tried it.
