change root passwd

Dear Experts,

When I change root passwd, I can logout and login to the same terminal only.If I open a new terminal, I cant login using the new or old passwd. But if I change back to the previous passwd,I can login from any terminal.

I use HP 11.23 OS. In this server cluster has been configured. Is this because of the cluster?

Kindly help me to resolve this problem.

Thanks in advance

Re: change root passwd

No. This is not a trusted system and passwd file is used for authentication.shadow file also not configured.

Re: change root passwd

it is due to some mistake from u end
if u want to change root passwd
#passwd
then it will ask old passwd
give them
then new passwd

thats all

Re: change root passwd

thanks for the response.

>then it will ask old passwd

when root change the passwd, the old passwd will not be asked. And when I change the paswd, it has been changed successfully. In the same terminal, new passwd is accepted.

Here direct root login is disabled.I've to su to root from any user.

when I open another terminal, I'm not able to su to root using new passwd.

when I open another terminal, I'm not able to su to root using new passwd.

if direct root login is disabled then, there may be restriction of terminal settings. that the terminal prevent accept new password.

Re: change root passwd

u can login as normal user then u have to do su
u mean u can login as root itself
that means u have to go console option then change u passwd may be passwd has some special menaing character

thanks and regards

Re: change root passwd

I removed root entry from /etc/securetty file.
Login directly as root.
Then change the root passwd and now the passwd is accepted from any terminal.

Thanks for your tips.
